Got a little lost in the way out... not a nice part of town. Anyway, the show was great. There couldn't have been more than 300 people there, maybe only 200. It was not crowded at all. On disc, Therion sounds like a very "big" band. Last night, however, it was really intimate. It was a bit weird to see them so close in such a minute club atmosphere. Their musicianship was spot-on, and there was a mosh pit going on for at least half of the songs. If it weren't so hot, I might have thought about jumping in !^)> It was cool that they brought vocalists on tour with them, but on such a small stage, they were kind of distracting to me. And half the time, it looked like they were uncomfortable in such an atmosphere. I did see the lead female vocalist smile a few times at the crowd, but half the time, I interpreted the look on her face as being uncomfortable (maybe because the crown almost tossed a stage diver right into her a few times) All of the vocalists sounded great. However, it was distracting to see the three (4?)in the back sitting there doing nothing most of the time while the band thrashed around on stage, everyone was so close. Lots of energy, LOTS, and the music didn't suffer for it. They opened with The Blood of Kingu (interesting, since the whole week I was thinking "good opening tune"), and closed with some stuff from Theli, lastly doing a Merciful Fate cover. I'll have to dig out Deggial and The Secret of the Runes, too. I don't think they are as good as Theli or the new double album (of which I'd wished they'd had more time to play material), but there is some great stuff on there also. Definitely a unique band which while becoming a lot more mature musically, has not lost its hardcore edge. Thanks to Paul for helping bring them here. I was in Sweden two months ago... never occurred to me to ask anyone there, just to get a vibe on how popular they are in their home country. All the Co&Ca albums are like a huge epic, which is cool. But c'mon, listen to the chorus on The Suffering, and then listen to the end of Three Evils ("Pull the trigger and the nightmare stops..."). Don't get me wrong, I love that part, but you gotta admit the similarity is a little to much. And I don't think they did that as a "Recalling" - Edu ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Sep 2005 23:16:42 -0400 From: Mike Shetzer To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: new listens Message-ID: <002301c5c3db$0cea6830$9b00a8c0@mizz> I think they totally did that vocal harmony identical-ism on purpose though. There's also the end of the last tune (I think) which has a Blood Red Summer recap. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Eduardo Ojeda" To: "Multiple recipients of list" Sent: Tuesday, September 27, 2005 10:55 PM Subject: Re: new listens >> I like their formula :) > > Hehe, yeah I like the formula too :-). I don't hold it against them, though. I'll also chalk it up to recurring themes, but who knows. Dream Theater pulls this kind of thing all the time too, and it doesn't bother me then either. I hardly ever pay attention to lyrics, but one thing I always enjoyed about Three Evils is how happy the music sounds while the lyric "pull the trigger and the nightmare ends" is sung. It's like, "Yay! Shoot! Die! Yay! This is fun! Die!" And everyone is dancing the whole time but there's blood all over the walls. Or something. Good stuff. I was just wondering, though DT played really good they do look very tired. They were mentioning that they were very tired and JP almost fell asleep bu t JLB and Mike also seemed less animated or I may be wrong!! ------=_Part_2253_2714231.1127901625155 ---YTSEJAM FILTER: Rest of message skipped because of attachment ---YTSEJAM-FILTER: This message was posted using the YML command ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 18:52:49 +0300 (WET) From: Olli Heikkinen To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Helsinki show 27.9. **spoilers** Message-ID: So the first show of the Octavarium tour is done, and what a show! First of all, here's the set list: Root of all Evil Panic Attack (some majesty song, don't know which) A Fortune in Lies Under a Glass Moon The Mirror Lie Peruvian Skies Fatal Tragedy About to Crash (reprise) Losing Time [intermission] As I Am This Dying Soul Never Ebough Sacrificed Sons OCTAVARIUM!!!! :D [encore]: In the Name of God [encore 2]: Pull Me Under / Metropolis Part 1 Medley For what I know, that the was the first time Octavarium was played live to an audience. It was definitely the best part of the gig. Portnoy's drum kit was a real beauty! Again, I'm not sure whether this was the first time people was it, but at least I was surprised at it. Glowing white with silver Majesty logos all over. Two of the bass drum heads had, as some suspected, the Majesty stop signs on them. I didn't see the the third one properly so I can't be sure. Petrucci's System of a Down -beard and Rudess' new toys are also worth to mention. Jordan used the Continuum besides Sacrificed Sons and Octavarium, also on The Mirror/Lie and Peruvian Skies. The Wherever I May Roam riff on Peruvian Skies was also neat. All in all a godly experience, being my first DT show ever. :) -- Olli ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Sep 2005 12:59:44 -0300 From: Eduardo Ojeda To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: new listens Message-ID: > And everyone is dancing the whole time but there's blood all over the > walls.
