I'm just hoping that we'll get a solo tour later on, hopefully a few months into '06. The last time I saw them was for 6DoIT, so I'm itching to see them again. As to opinions of Octavarium... I personally like it. I've listened to it all the way through about a dozen times, and I'm to the point where I only listen to my favorites now, which happen to be 'The Root of All Evil', 'I Walk Beside You,' and 'Never Enough'. 'The Answer Lies Within' is a pretty weak track, in my opinion...especially for a ballad. It's the only track that I will outright skip now. 'These Walls' and 'Panic Attack' are ok on here, but I can imagine that they would kick major ass live. Has anyone else noticed that the opening bit of 'These Walls' sounds like the intro to 'Prison Sex' by Tool? 'Sacrificed Sons' is a little too long and too slow for the vocals, but it has a good instrumental bit in the middle. I personally think that 'Sacrificed Sons' would have made a better instrumental track rather than a song, something that this cd needed. 'Octavarium' is awesome in parts, and if I had any skill at music editing, I would try and edit it down to a 15 minute song or so. Very Pink Floyd in the opening segment, which I like very much. By the way, what the F is an Octavarium, anyway? I like the effects that they did with James's voice on this cd. I think it mixes well with the music. I also like how Jordan has gone more ambient with his sound instead of constanly hitting us with 64th note squeals. John doesn't shred as much here as on Train of Though, which I find an improvement...it's nice to see him doing alot more melodic work with his guitar rather than seeing how fast he can do scales. 'Awake' is still my favorite cd of DT's, but I think that this is a good addition to their catalog and is a step above Train of Thought, which I still can't get into. On a side note, my wife can't stand DT (but she has seen them in concert with me 4 times, what a trooper!), but she likes 'I Walk Beside You' and doesn't mind this cd too much compared to the others, as she finds it to be more accessible to her ears. Anyone else heard comments like that from non-DT listeners? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jul 2005 08:59:18 -0700 From: Brian To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Gigantour and Octavarium Message-ID: Matt Rose wrote: > By the way, what the F is an Octavarium, anyway? > > Music theory lesson approaching.. In most scales there are 8 notes, so it would take 8 ascending or descending notes to reach the octave of the note you started with. An octave of a note has the same name but is double the frequency. If a note has a frequency of 440Hz, its octave is 880Hz. This is their 8th studio CD.. There's also a bit of wordplay going on in that octave is a musical term, but Octavarium really would just mean "8 different". There you go, more than you ever wanted to know. :) *Andrew Coutermarsh* http://www.acvox.com/ /*andrew* at *acvox* dot *com*/ Eduardo Ojeda wrote: >Heh, so LaBrie is trapped inside the double of the frequency of a note? > >Talk about an LSD trip :-) > >- Edu > > >> Music theory lesson approaching..
