I think it's actually some of the more experimental stuff if you listen more. I actually like this album better than SDoIT and SFaM... It seems more a return to good ole progmetal. -The Doc -- -------------- http://www.zeromemory.com - metal for your ears. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 02:42:59 -0700 From: "Dr. Mosh" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Graham Message-ID: <20050612094259.GB8635@zero> Going against Graham is tantamount to spitting on the emperor... ;p -The Doc 0. Message-ID: Ok, I spent a few days without sun, light, food or shelter listening to this CD... and the verdict is (so far, :-)) is: C+ (around the high 70 percentile). I will say, there's quite some good riffage and the crush guitar factor, as always is high. The melodrama and sap factors are higher than normal, though (see song 2 and 5), BUT... "These Walls" and "I Walk Beside You" are quite strong indeed. I stand corrected on that note. U2ish? Sure, but they've had a U2 influence since IaW, which is a good thing. It separates the song writing chops from all the other lacking DT clones out there. Also, parts of Octavarium are great, but the song just seems to drag on. Overall, I can still say this is a slight disappointment after ToT, though. Overall, after a slight disappointment in most prog releases over the last year (Fates Warning and Enchant being slight disappointments, though in the low 80 percentile) I should be accustomed to this. Andrew, I can sympathize with your sentiment, and I think a few further listens clarified SOME overlooked melodic structures. But I still feel something is missing. LIke I mentioned, a self-produced disc of 80 minutes of music is overkill. I'd really love to see a shorter DT disc. Hell I should be happy they decided not to release a 3-CD box set of new material, lol. But, likewise, about the ballads... I agree... Dream Theater ballads tend to be sappy and melodramatic. Fates have always been able to handle "ballads" in a much more poignant and subtle not to mention sincere fashion for some reason. All this said, DT are still one of the only bands I will go out and make a specific excursion to the record store to pick up their CD's on release date. Debating the merits of Dream Theater reminds me of an old Dark Helmet quote: "Evil will always triumph because good is dumb". How that correlates is beyond me, but it reminds me of SPACEBALLS. :-) Your friendly neighborhood allroundniceguy Scott Mosher | http://www.theambientmind.com/ Inferno at CD Baby: http://www.cdbaby.com/all/scottmosher ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 7164 ************************** === Contributions to ytsejam: ytsejam@torchsong.com === === Send requests to: ytsejam-request@torchsong.com === === More information at: http://www.dreamt.org/local/ytsejam.php === === Brought by the ghost of ytsejam@arastar.coms past === === Reach the owner of this list at: ytsejam-owner@torchsong.com ===
