We're halfway through first listen. I wouldn't dream of forming an > opinion yet. I did write a review for Amazon UK, though: i was wondering how long it would take a first impression to appear on the list. i'm heading out in about a half-hour to pick it up. i hope to get a listen or two in this afternoon. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Jun 2005 12:03:07 -0400 From: "Rob P" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Octavarium Message-ID: After the first round, I love it!!!!!!!! Remember also that I HATED ToT with a passion. Everything that was wrong for me with ToT has been righted with this CD. For example I love having the ballads. "I Walk Beside You" is a great great song. I can't say enough good things about it, so I am sure I will be gushing more. I like it!!! Lots of variety on this disc... not the full metal blast of ToT, nor is it all calm and quiet. I also think JR had a little more input and prominence on this album (and rightly so). JP also calmed down his tendons and fingers, cooling down the mad shredder in every single song, which is fine by me (showing restraint leaves me wanting more, although hearing him shred like a madman is also entertaining). Some of the tunes don't even have instrumental breaks or solos... seems like a step up for DT to become prominent songwriters instead of just making the most insane complex music ever. Granted I like the other side of DT too, but I think they concentrated on songs more for this album... upon first listen I am quite impressed. Not blown away, but impressed. It takes a lot to blow me away on the first listen, especially having expected so much from DT over the years. I agree with you, Rob about "I walk beside you". Fantastic tune with a great sing along-able chorus! Other general track comments... #1 - I knew it! Glass Prison continues!! I said so back in the prediction stage, didn't I? ;) looks like there's still 4 parts left! #2 - A pinch of cheese but a good listener friendly tune after the first track of insanity. #3 and #5 - Can't remember them :) doesn't mean I don't like them though... more thoughts to come after I listen a few more times. I think in one of these songs they go REALLY fast and balls heavy... my neck hurts from headbanging alone in my room. #4 - wunderbar! possibly my favorite tune... love that chorus! Restraint in the form of little to no solo just makes you itch for more. #6 - Nothing too fantastic, although the instrumental break is fun. The part in the chorus where he says "for your ungrateful ways" sounds REALLY familiar in terms of melody, but I can't seem to place it... ideas? #7 - a "typical" DT epic (not a bad thing, though). Seems a little late in terms of lyrical content and ideas, no? Some cool interplay, riffs, solos and vocal melodies. #8 - loads of fun! What's an Octavarium anyway? I was almost disappointed that there was no "ridiculous" part in the album, but then between parts 3 and 4 holy crap... they go insane. Lots of influences in this opus too! Very Symphony X-ish at the beginning, besides the insane instrumentalism, parts 3 and 4 totally remind me of Genesis, and there's even a Steve Howe style 5 second acoustic guitar blast! Ok, musical overload... time to take a nap! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Rob P" To: "Multiple recipients of list" Sent: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 11:59 AM Subject: Octavarium > After the first round, I love it!!!!!!!! "The Answer Lies Within" is the ballad then. Both are favorites. To gush further, the title track is quite amazing. At first listen I really didn't like it, thought now its slowly growing on me as usual. One thing I can't get over though is the "sound" of the album. The mixing seems a little weird to me.Petrucci and the vocals seem way down in the mix. I think if it "sounded" better, I may like it a bit more.On a few tunes I'm not sure whats up with Petrucci's low ass sounding tuning too. On these walls the intro sounds like his guitar is tuned to C or something. Might as well be playing a bass. I'm of course going to give it more listens, but my impressions so far are a little mixed. I agree with the fact that Petrucci seems a little lower in the mix during his solos, sometimes a little inaudible. Other times I think he's quite prominent during the rhythmic parts, which comes as no surprise. The heavy parts sound quite brick heavy because of his low tuning, I love it! :D When I called my local record store, all their copies except one had been reserved, so I was able to grab the last one. Impressive that my two bit town had been called by all the locals to say "please hold a copy for me!"... although that could mean they only had like 3 copies to begin with ;) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jonin" To: "Multiple recipients of list" Sent: Tuesday, June 07, 2005 7:37 PM Subject: New Album > > > Picked it up today of course like everyone else and so far I've listened > to it 3 times. I can't tell if it rocks out like some others said, since I'm not all the way through yet. :) There are some nice rocking tracks, esp the opener.. though the following ballad is kind of ... meh. Note that I am not a 110% shredder-freak. Like the reprise of lyrics from ToT in what I've heard so far. Essentially enjoying it, but getting confused as I've also heard the new LaBrie solo project recently :) ~alex = Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. www.Scenes.de __________________________________ Discover Yahoo! At first listen I really didn't like it, thought now its i got my copy as well. i've listened twice in the office, and one in the car--i just got back from taking a drive where i listened to it loud!! Tracks 1, 4, and 8 currently stand out as being memorable---i'm not saying i don't like the other stuff, but just haven't listed more thoroughly as of yet... i think it's about time to make a CD with all parts of The Glass Prison up to this point and see how it all sounds. i wonder if we will ever be treated to DT playing all twelve parts live once Mike completes the rest??` ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Jun 2005 22:18:33 -0400 From: Mike Shetzer To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: New Album Message-ID: <001001c56bd0$5ebc5e60$9b00a8c0@mizz> > i think it's about time to make a CD with all parts of The Glass Prison > up to this point and see how it all sounds. i wonder if we will ever > be treated to DT playing all twelve parts live once Mike completes the > rest??` That would be WAY kickass.... good idea :) Hopefully seeing them in the Gigantour will bring that idea to life. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Jun 2005 07:04:39 -0400 From: xcitor To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: New Album Message-ID: Quoting > on <06/07/05 @ 19:35>: > > > i think it's about time to make a CD with all parts of The Glass Prison > > up to this point and see how it all sounds. i wonder if we will ever > > be treated to DT playing all twelve parts live once Mike completes the > > rest??` > > That would be WAY kickass.... good idea :) > Hopefully seeing them in the Gigantour will bring that idea to life. speaking of which...
