TMV is great. They are not prog in the sense that you're used to. They're 
lunatics with high pitched vocals a la Rush or Coheed and Cambria, weird 
effects and sounds, introspective yet nonsensical lyrics, powerful chaotic 
rhythm, and mostly... they rock!
I'd say to track down a sample of the tune Eriatarka, Inertiatic ESP or 
Cygnus....Vismund Cygnus for a sample.

i'm a johnny-come-lately to The Mars Volta phenomenon, i must admit. i
picked up Frances the Mute recently, but don't have any other releases.

FtM is very good. in terms of the strictest definition of `progressive',
i'd say they are very progressive. psychedelic and funky -- i actually
dig it quite a bit.

in the end, i'd have to say that if you enjoy the progressive element of
DT, you'll probably find TMV palatable.
