On a similar vein, I highly recommend CUCKOO'S EGG by Clifford Stoll. It's somewhat old now, but hopefully it's still in print. Basically it's the true story of how an astronomy student at Berkeley went from noticing a few slight network access irregularities on their mainframe...to helping the FBI and NSA catch some honest-to-god Communist hacker-spies. It's engagingly written, has lots of nicely-explained technical stuff for the layman...but maybe the best part of the book is the way it shows Cliff's inner evolution from starry-eyed Berkeley hippie to an older, more worldly-wise and self-taught network security guru. I met Cliff once at a convention and he's the real deal. :) > > One of my favorite > > parts is where Sarah poses a riddle about locks on boxes which basically > > explains public key cryptography. Have a safe, warm, happy holiday / vacation everyone... welcome the new year and all it will bring! Message-ID: I HIGHLY recommend anything by a young Aussie author Mathew Rielly (sp?). Particularly Ice Station and the follow up Area 21 (I think its 21, the military zone in the Mojave?) and Temple. Really gripping stuff from the get go. Just a little more light hearted than maths books and a bit far fetched but man, I'd like to see the movie version of these books. It would blow any action movie away. Have a great Christmas all.
