I think I prefer Derek the most, especially for the way he uses timbre, but your characterization of DT post-FII as an "LTE-ization" is spot on in my opinion. Related issues I've raised are here: http://www.dreamtheater.net/bb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=59844 Glenn Is "play so well" what the kids are calling "massive overplaying with little sense of melody, dynamics, or *feel*" these days? I think the setlist could have been a bit more varied (I mean, nothing from "Awake" minus "Erotomania" in the Instrumedley?!?) and I still prefer both Derek and Kevin's note and sound choices, as well as their style and impact within DT during their tenures. That's why I say, "I like it as best I can". For better or worse (mainly depending on your preference of keyboardist and LTE-ization of the band post FII) it's the best we can expect from Dream Theater, circa 2004. ---YTSEJAM-FILTER: This message was posted using the YML command ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Nov 2004 01:06:30 -0600 From: Al Stroschein To: retaehT maerD Subject: Tweaking the jam Message-ID: Hi there fellow Jamsters! It's your friendly neighborhood ProGtologist here once again to put the defibrillator on high and give the Jam a much needed blast in the ribs. George W. Bush is a less than perfect human... At times he can be a buffoon.. But electing a chameleon like Kerry just to get Bush out of office is like shooting yourself in the head to cure your headache. The Democrats simply supplied the WRONG candidate. And that's a FACT. Now can we put the politics to rest? In the year 2004, Al thinks both Fates Warning and Symphony X have a more listenable discography than Dream Theater.. It's a shame that the last few DT albums sound more like formulas than creations. IMHO, the only thing that saved Fates Warning's "Disconnected" was "Still Remains"... But the albums from "No Exit" to "Still Life" more than makes up for minor shortcomings in more recent work. Symphony X just plain ROCKS! Put that in your political pipe and smoke it! Sorry.. :( I forgot the pipe smokers were Kerry folk.. ;o) Long live Gay marriage! If your not for Kerry, your a dumb backwoods redneck who is too stupid to realize how good he is for you. Who is really out of touch? Also, I see people mentioning the "bad economy" however these same people talk about buying all these cd's that are coming out. If the economy were so bad, would you have money to buy cd's? Plus the unemployment level is the same as it was in '96 and the Dow is over 10000. When Clinton was President, people were dancing in the streets to these figures, but now its a "bad economy". Again, who is really out of touch. At least we don't have to hear the excuse of "but he didn't get the majority vote" this time. ==== "There is no worse tyranny than to force a man to pay for what he does not want merely because you think it would be good for him." -- Robert Heinlein "Civilization is the progress toward a society of privacy." -- Ayn Rand, The Fountainhead, 1943. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Again, who is really out of touch. At > least we don't have to hear the excuse of "but he didn't get the > majority vote" this time. I'm sorry; I wasn't going to post anything because I didn't want to get into any kind of a political fight with people, but I had to say something because these facts that Rob posted aren't quite correct. Look. I don't believe you're stupid if you voted for Bush. I don't consider myself to be a liberal elitist (in fact, I'm quite centrist in most things and on some things am QUITE conservative), nor do I look down on those who believe what they believe. However, the first comment is just plain incorrect, the second is a half- truth, and the third is a false indicator. If I posted that I bought five CDs, would you be saying "See? The economy's not bad." However, you have no way of knowing how I got those five CDs, nor is it really fair to judge the entire economy based on a 75 purchase. If those were the only five CDs I bought all year, suddenly it doesn't fit that I "have money to buy cd's." Yes, buying CDs is a luxury, but I don't believe that it's fair, nor is it correct, to say that just because you buy CDs you have all this money to throw around. Second: Yes, the unemployment level is at a relatively low rate. But the only reason for that is that the unemployment figures don't include so- called "discouraged workers," which is the number of people who have stopped looking for work altogether. I heard on the news that if the number of discouraged workers was factored in, our unemployment rate would be something like eleven percent. Thirdly, the Dow is NOT an indicator of the economy. It's merely an indicator of how well certain companies are doing. Relatively very few people own stock in the companies that make up the Dow index, and those people can be virtually guaranteed not to be in the middle-to-lower class. So really, all the Dow Industrial Index shows us is how the upper class is doing, but mainly it shows us how corporations are doing. And I would venture to say that this is a direct result of Bush's tax cuts, which nobody can deny favored the rich and large corporations far more than it did anybody else. I think it's just naove to say that the economy is doing well because the stock market is doing well. I have my reasons for voting Kerry, and I hope that you don't think I'M out of touch for voting for him, but the major reason has nothing to do with many other people's reasons. I didn't vote for him because he's pro- choice (although I do think that people who voted for Bush merely because he's pro-life are extremely ignorant mainly because I think it's hypocritical to vote for somebody who's pro-life but is also pro-death penalty; how can you say that the sanctity of life is so important if you're prenatal but once you're born we have no problem killing you?). I voted against Bush (yes, I voted against Bush, not for Kerry) mainly because of one thing: the PATRIOT Act. There is no possible way that I can support a president who ADVOCATES citizens' giving up their civil liberties. The PATRIOT Act is a perfect indicator of how Americans are so willing to give up their freedoms to obtain a little bit of convenience in their lives. As Benjamin Franklin once said, "Anybody who would give up essential liberties in order to obtain a little temporary security deserves neither liberty nor security." I think that statement has never been more true than it is today. In fact, I came EXTREMELY close to voting for neither Kerry nor Bush because I found out that Kerry supports the PATRIOT Act as well (albeit in a slightly different way, though I forget how it was that he differentiated himself) in the second debate. You are completely WRONG! This is a typical attitude from one of those ignorant, right-wing psychopaths. Open your eyes! It is quite clear to anyone who is in the least bit intelligent that Kerry is a major fan and supporter of Pain of Salvation, Opeth and I've even heard Porcupine Tree. The whole "out of touch" thing is a vicious rumour spread by the government and the sheep in the public. That means YOU! Actually, Bush wouldn't even be able to pretend to be a fan of Morse, Chromakey and Sherinian if it wasn't for Kerry, because Kerry INVENTED progressive rock and metal in the first place, back when he was in VIETNAM.
