He states that in a few cases that the particular clip used in the final track had not been filmed. HOWEVER, mabrown (MP.com webmaster) did a stellar job in piecing together all the various video clips that make up the DVD. And of course the audio is overdubbed - would you really want the sounds right within the drum=room (which would come off more like a bootleg) or the finished (mixed) sound - I'd wager most would want the finished sound. With regards to the 10 Degrees of Turbulent Drumming - yeah, it wasn't as good, but that's to be expected given that this was the first real DVD of this sort that was put together (the earlier clinic DVD-r released not counting). Beginning with the sessions for Bridges Across Forever (TA) MP would make "visual notes" before each take, letting the camera know which take is was so that when putting together the DVD, it would be much easier to get the accurate/correct takes. This was after the 6DoIT sessions, so obviously it wasn't as easy to piece it all together for those sessions. Additionally, I don't believe there was video for every single section of drumming recorded for 6DoIT, which would also explain why not all songs are represented in full (and some sections not at all). By saying overdub, I mean pasting the already recorded drum tracks that were used for the ToT album on top of a video where we see MP trying his best to reproduce what he played when recording those tracks, as for the whole thing to seem natural. In other words, it's a playback. That means to me either one of two things (or perhaps both): a) MP was on a tight schedule and didn't have enough time to practice the songs as to get them nailed in a reasonable amount of time so he chose the easy way out b) Audio mixers/Editors/Budget/Whatever were on short supply As most, if not all other drum DVDs out there, what the audience usually gets is what the drummer is playing when being filmed, with the result being mixed and mastered of course. Liquid Drum Theater was produced this way and the drum sound was excellent. This unfortunately was not the case with DoT, which disappointed me. I mean, who would want to see JP soloing with the audio being an overdub of what you'd listen on ToT? -----Original Message-----(snipped) From: ytsejam@torchsong.com [mailto:ytsejam@torchsong.com] On Behalf Of Scott Hansen Sent: Saturday, September 18, 2004 8:40 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: MP DVDs > DoT has good sound indeed but unfortunately it is an overdub.
