Message-ID: I recently got ahold of the new Ayreon. Great album. I have pretty much all of Arjen Lucassen's stuff, including the amazing Star One: Space Metal. I'm a HUGE fan. But lately, when I'm listening to new Ayreon, it more and more reminds me of old Ayreon. I mean, he's got a formula and he's sticking to it. Lyrics like "Is this real? Or just some fantasy?" Can be found on SEVERAL of his albums. Other similar lyrics also are repeated. "You have a choice!" is another example. Also, I'm getting the feeling that he has run out of chord progressions. There are sequences in the new album that almost plagiarize some of the stuff from The Electric Castle and The Universal Migrator. I can visualize Arjen's thought process sometimes. When he first started out, he might very well have been an enormously gifted songwriter/hippie, loving bands like Pink Floyd and Hawkwind. He was influenced as well by a lot of Sci-Fi television and movies. Anyway, his first effort, Actual Fantasy, was a somewhat disjointed album, but with a common theme: to question reality. Then came The Final Experiment, where the character, "Ayreon", goes on a journey. (I'm not familiar with the whole story, since I recently got it) His ambitions grew when he did "Into the Electric Castle" that is a wonderful tale of eight disparate characters finding their way through a strange, surreal castle of light. Arjen then apparently wanted to go even BIGGER, so he tells the tale of The Universal Migrator. A man who journeys into his own mind, with the help of a machine, to find out the origin and mysteries of the universe. He finally decides to lay off the "storytelling" a little and does Star One, which takes classic Sci-Fi movies and TV shows and puts them to song. Now we have The Human Equation which tells the story of a man in a coma, fighting his way out and fighting the demons from within. His most ambitious effort yet! I guess I just expect more out of Ayreon(Arjen) these days. He obviously has the storytelling down pat. But his plots are getting redundant. And so are his musical ideas. He's showing some growth on this new one, going in different directions and trying new things/sounds, but I'm finding he's going back to his tried-and-true musical formulas again and again. I love Ayreon!!! Don't get me wrong!!! He's just such a master songwriter and keyboard player, I feel he can do SO MUCH MORE, ya know? Some people are turned off by Ayreon because it's "corny", and it often is! But I have a soft spot for that I guess... Why not just write an album that is all about the music? I'd even buy an instrumental album from him! What about an Arjen guest appearance on the next Dream Theater album? Or Devin Townsend album? Opeth? (Meshuggah???) What do you guys think? Will Ayreon continue to evolve? Or is Arjen stuck in a friggin' rut that he'll never get out of? Should I just shut up and let the man play what he wants to play? - Dave P.S. I have a similar feeling about some Dream Theater lyrical content. If I hear James sing about another friggin' misunderstood little girl, I'm gonna SCREAM!!!!! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! I find that with this album, they delve just enough into the music focus that it leaves you wanting more. Not giving my ears EXACTLY what they want is sometimes just what I subconsciously want :) I do agree that there are repetitive themes and lyrics though. It's hard to have wonderfully insightful lyrics to themes like this without totally alienating the listener. I think back to Mars Volta and Dimmu Borgir, two very contrasting bands but share the common quality of insanely un-understandable lyrics. Makes me think that they just write random nonsense, or they're so much smarter than they let on. Somewhat calmer lyrics allow the listener to get less confused, sometimes even follow what's happening as you listen. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dave Peterson To: Multiple recipients of list Sent: Tuesday, July 06, 2004 7:46 PM Subject: Ayreon: Self Plagiarism???
