It's more of a novelty for established fans. Occasionally, a live recording/re-arrangement is better than a studio version. On 12:5, the arrangements are different, and interesting, but I would say that the original studio versions of all of the songs are much better (more layers, more effects, etc.). "Niall Connaughton" queried: > On another note, anyone know the brand name of the guitar you can see Daniel playing in Rick's photos? He plays the same on the TA DVD. I put those guitars and JP's Music Men into the category of "Why do such great players have such bland looking guitars" :P < Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! DG plays Parker guitars. They pretty much all have that same look. Parker is like a custom shop (i.e. something like Paul Reed Smith), and were big innovators in synthetic materials, and very lightweight guitars. Pricey, but recently they released some that were less expensive. I found a less expensive Parker (P-38) to be very comfortable. May have been the best "feeling" guitar I ever tried. I wouldn't get into a debate on the "sound" you can get, as that's very subjective. The upper cutaway functions as a convenient handle for picking it up (not quite as obvious as the Vai monkey-grip). One gotcha: that sharp angle at the top tends to dig into your chest if you are sitting down and playing. Not as bad as trying to play a V on your knee though. p.s. I tried out and purchased a Parker before I ever knew that anyone (such as PoS) used them, so my review/decision wasn't biased by that... __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Literally jaw-dropping. > (at least when i saw them about a year ago in Athens) Their performance at the first ProgPower USA, near Chicago, is still one of the best five live performances I've ever seen. There were grown men crying in the front row. After Symphony X's performance the previous night everyone thought they couldn't be topped. We were wrong. (Amazingly enough, PoS performed that show after very little sleep, having encountered flight delays in from Iceland and having to sleep overnight at BWI Airport.) Their performance at PPUSA III wasn't quite as jaw-dropping but was still excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing them again this fall. (Gee, really? I'm their sponsor. :)) For all my ProgPower pics and stuff, go here: http://66.193.230.227/~paulcas/progpowr.html (I -think- all the links are working now...I just moved my site, so things are a little topsy-turvy.) -- +--- Paul W. The guy center stage is playing a Parker Fly of one sort or another. I couldn't find a really clear shot of the guitarist on the right, but it looks to be a modified Jackson (based on the head stock). Really, it could be any one of a number of relatively cheapo shred machines (Ibanez, Jackson, Schecter, etc.) based on what little of it I could see. Oh, well. Hope this helps. As far as the Parker goes, it may look a little plain and silly, but it's one heck of a nice guitar. Those composite necks are dreamy. All the same, I'll stick to my Steinberger. :) As far as great players with bland guitars, I can't answer that one. I'm an awful player with an army of really flash guitars. I'm sure the guitars must sound good, otherwise people like Neal Morse and DG wouldn't play them. Same with the Music Men that JP uses... nice guitars for the sound, but they look like the MM equivalent of a $200 Squier with 10W Combo amp package :P The old Ibanez JPMs were cool. I didn't always dig the colours, but I like the shape. If you ever have a spare hour to yourself, go through the guitar section of Vai's website. There are a lot there :P Niall > -----Original Message----- > From: ytsejam@torchsong.com [mailto:ytsejam@torchsong.com]On Behalf Of > Brian Hansen > Sent: Friday, 4 June 2004 3:12 AM > To: Multiple recipients of list > Subject: RE: PoS 12:5 and Parker > > > Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! Anyway, I was asking about the guy in centre stage, who is Daniel Gildenlow, a singer, songwriter and guitarist who is somewhat talented... :P By relatively cheapo, you mean that in 30 years' time, no one will be paying absolutely stupid amounts for an Ibanez that's had the absolute shit beaten out of it, has pickups that have more noise than signal, and has more of the body wood showing than the original paint? :P Ever wanted to sell your car and buy a guitar?
