Not > everything with growling vocals falls in this genre Nope. Bands with growling vox are generally classed under the meta-label "extreme metal," which covers a lot of territory. Dimmu are black metal, while CoB...... Umm. Progressive death? Not really, but they're not black-metal either. They're quite progressive, though; swap out the vocals and you'd have one of the world's more technically-able prog-metal bands. I mentioned Dimmu and CoB because when people -- especially devout prog-heads -- make generalizations about "black metal," they're painting with a broad brush -- and often including ANY band with growling vox. The point of it all? Just as with most styles of music, death-metal and black-metal are progressing rapidly. (It's amazing what can happen when you decide to allow some low-end in your recordings.) Mostly gone are the days of Darkthrone and no bass, only treble. :) It's getting harder and harder to categorize many bands into one style, and that's a Good Thing. How would you categorize Opeth? They're not black metal, not really solely death metal either. The more adjectives you have to use to qualify bands' descriptions ("melodic," "orchestral," etc.), the more diverse and vibrant that scene is. I'll never forget seeing the trailer for HELLBOY in the theater and damn-near leaping up out of my seat. "Holy shit! That's Dimmu Borgir!" Apparently, SOMEONE out there is paying attention. :) -- +--- Paul W. I think to really define a band or understand what it means when someone describes them, you just gotta listen, not try and categorize :) >I'll never forget seeing the trailer for HELLBOY in the theater and >damn-near leaping up out of my seat. What a killer performance of that song! Niall, you gotta remember that most of those "classics" have already appeared on a previous live album. Of the ones you listed above, the only one not to have appeared at all was UaGM, and that one did appear on the Live in Tokyo video. Voices has already appeared (in full) on both OiaL and LSFNY and each of the others has also appeared in full, with the exception of Scarred (altho most of it is there). Mike is always trying to make sure the stuff that hasn't appeared on previous releases is what makes it on to the next release. Add to that the fact that some tracks have not been played on this tour (6:00 for instance) and you can understand why the setlist is the way it is. As it is, with the current setlist, the only songs to appear on previous live releases that are pretty much unchanged are Trial of Tears and Pull Me Under, and even then there are minor changes given that Jordan is playing them (instead of Derek). Beyond This Life and Hollow Years, while having previously been on LSFNY and OiaL respectively, deserve another chance because both are significantly different. The rest of the tracks have not appeared on another live release (OaMoT, NM and the 6DoIT and ToT tracks), so I think this setlist makes lots of sense. However, I would class a live album as different to a DVD in terms of judging what's been done before. I would be disappointed to see A Mind Beside Itself on this DVD as well, unless they did something different. But I would like to get Scarred, TTT or Metropolis on a DVD. The closest we've come to Met Pt1 was the partial bit on 5YIALT (or was it on LiT? I can't remember, and my videos are shot to hell - thank god for the DVD release). I know MP has some kind of mental 3D matrix of every place they've played against every time they've played there against every song they've played, and it's cool that he does that to give good variety. It's just that when I look at that setlist, there aren't really the highlights that stand out as the "wow" part of the show. Of course, I haven't heard it yet, but I don't see the songs in the list that make me think "awesome, I finally get to see this played live". Keep in mind that the DVDs are the only chance I get to see a concert :P Niall > -----Original Message----- > From: ytsejam@torchsong.com [mailto:ytsejam@torchsong.com]On Behalf Of > Scott Hansen > Sent: Friday, 30 April 2004 5:00 PM > To: Multiple recipients of list > Subject: Re: new DVD setlist > > Niall, > > you gotta remember that most of those "classics" have already > appeared on a previous live album. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Apr 2004 09:33:03 -0700 From: "Trevor Hoit" To: Subject: DT Troub Message-ID: <011601c42ed0$cf499dc0$message_id_removed> >>Ytsejam started as email_address_removed after the Los Angeles Troubador >>concert, so my guess is that it started in November 1992 >Holy shit...I was at that Troub show!
