But it doesn't take a lot of talent to get up on stage, scream/roar, turn the distortion on the guitar up to 11 (you have to have an amp that goes to 11) and churn out something that has no relation to music whatsoever. I'm not saying that most death metal bands are like this, but the genre attracts a lot of such bands. Just go to a small metal club and see the kind of "local talent" that gets on stage these days :P Or check out the opening acts that you get for metal concerts. The first Opeth concert in Sydney had "Flesh Mechanic" and Alchemist... I think Alchemist only sounded good because flesh mechanic was, bar none, the worst band I have ever seen, heard or heard of in my entire life. It was amazing to see the change in quality through the act. Flesh Mechanic got up and made random noise, then Alchemist got up and played songs that sounded like they had actually been written. Then Opeth got up there and it was night and day apart. Death metal's not the only genre that has crap bands in it... they all do. I think people just find the crap death metal much more offensive than crap rock :P Niall > -----Original Message----- > From: ytsejam@torchsong.com [mailto:ytsejam@torchsong.com]On Behalf Of > WB Henderson > Sent: Monday, 26 April 2004 4:57 AM > To: Multiple recipients of list > Subject: Re: good ole days > > > Dr. Teeth wrote: > > >(FYI, I HATE most death metal bands, for their lack of > >melody/talent/songwriting) > > To say that most death metal doesn't require talent or songwriting > abilities is pretty ignorant of most death metal. > > Brian > > [NP...Pestilence - Testimony of the Ancients] > > ============================================ > WB Henderson email_address_removed > ============================================ > ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Apr 2004 07:43:42 -0500 From: "Souter, Jan-Michael" To: "'ytsejam@torchsong.com'" Subject: RE: death metal Message-ID: "Just say No to the Cookie Monster" ; ) -----Original Message----- From: Niall Connaughton [mailto:email_address_removed Death metal's not the only genre that has crap bands in it... they all do. I couldn't agree more, even though 6 years ago I'd have probably tossed out the same blanket generalization that Dr. Teeth did. And like most generalizations, it would have been wrong. Hmmm. Children of Bodom, Dimmu Bogir (especially their last two CDs).... There's a lot of talent and songwriting (and dare I say it, progressive elements) there, and those two are just for starters. -- +--- Paul W.
