I just read on their website www.xplanetx.com that guitarist Tony Macalpine is to leave PX after they play at Nearfest 04. Rumor has it he'll be replaced with aussie TJ Helmerich. --Boundary_(ID_oFqYP9Zib2ou2pDATXR72g) ---YTSEJAM FILTER: Rest of message skipped because of attachment ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 15:03:54 +1000 From: George Papadopetros To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: PX news Message-ID: You've just blown me away with this email Mike. Not that Tony Macalpine is leaving the band but that through their website you've confirmed what I was suspecting for a while. Forgive my ignorance. People on this list in the past had mentioned a drummer called Virgil. I thought "could it be the same Virgil???" Back in 1987/88 or so we used to go and see this phenomenal drummer called Virgil Donati play drums in a Van Halen tribute band Hans Valen, in tiny pubs. He then went on to play in a fussion band called Loose Change. I remember during one mind blowing solo a cymbal fell off the stand. With his feet alone and 2 bass drums (or a double bass pedal, I can't remember) he continued to entertain the crowd while he put the cymbal back on. I knew a couple of years later he went to the US to make his fortune but I didn't hear anything of him. And wasn't Macalpine in a band called Racer X, and had a column on Guitar World magazine about that time? Nostalgia or what. Ah those were the days, uni bum, single, everything was about the music.... So now I know. Looks like I've got some catching up to do and a few cds to buy..... Virgil is now one of the best known drummers in the prog circle and continues to be an absolute freakshow.
