However, Jim (who wrote the notes below) expressed himself better than I did. Definitely I will not "abondon ship" and I intend to get all their old stuff that I understand I will be pleased. However (again) I will borrow a friend's copy of the future release (new material) before buying it. Suit yourself, but given that DT seems to be pulling out more of the stops than ever before, you're missing out on an incredible tour. Besides the ToT tracks, DT has so far done 4 different "one-off" covers on this tour (Queen's Death on Two Legs, Pink Floyd's One of These Days, Yes' Heart of the Sunrise and Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell), as well as played To Live Forever, the complete ACoS, OaMoT, TOWHtStS and Trial of Tears at different shows. Plus the improved light/video show and you have a promising tour to look forward to. But if you don't wanna, your choice, and IMO, your loss. Scott PS In case you're curious to see the setlists from this tour, you can go either to the tourography (which contains all the setlists ever): http://www.mikeportnoy.com/dates/tourography.asp?menu=dates or you can look at a thread that has all the setlists just from this tour in order in one thread here: http://www.mikeportnoy.com/forum/tm.asp?m=396489 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Feb 2004 08:24:39 -0500 From: "Pierre Tessier" To: Subject: Toughts on TOT Message-ID: Hi, I purchased the album the day it came out, and listened to it a lot. My first impression was that this is not prog but just plain metal, and felt the album is too heavy. Every DT album I purchased and after the first listen of the album, I had this feeling of wanting more and anticipated their next release, this time (for the first time), it did not. Althought tecnically perfect, something is missing, can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's the fact that DT took a short time to work on the album, I dont know. One thing I find missing is Jordan, the keyboards are stuck here and there in the back, only a few times coming upfront. Not a good thing to do to such a gifted player. Iv'e read already on this list about who will replace him when he leaves, and it started me thinking, if DT restrains him more on the next album, he's out for sure. The last song of the album, saves the album (for me) and gives me some hope for the next album. But I wont miss them in Montreal, that's for sure I'll be there!!!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Feb 2004 10:18:58 -0500 From: "I-Man" To: Subject: Re: Re: TRAIN OF THOUGHT Message-ID: <001501c3e99f$e29d0900$e4230f9d@ivansmtyz9ixwb> I think it's a great song too, with fond memories. Be sure not to panic. Interviews with Dream Theater spoke of Jordan being left low in the mix, and not a major player on this release because it was planned as a more traditional Metal album from the start. No worries bro. Also, there are plenty of time signature changes throughout the CD. It's not all 4/4 time :) -----Original Message----- From: Pierre Tessier [mailto: PTessi@lacitec.on.ca Hi, I purchased the album the day it came out, and listened to it a lot. Eh, it's not really possible. There are plugins that kinda fudge it by doing some phase inverting, the idea being that vocals are usually panned center, and this trick will kill anything panned center. It doens't work as well if there's any kind of stereo reverb, panning, background vocals (which are usually panned, too). Plus there are other things that are typically panned center (kick drum and probably snare) that you wouldn't want removed. The plugins may incorporate some heavy EQ, too, that cuts out a lot of the frequency range where human voice usually resides. But basically, once you mix down the audio, that's it, there's no going back. If you want an instrumental track, you'd have to go back to the actual raw tracks and mix them down again, but without the vocals. Or, you could get musicians to play the tunes, then you record and mix them. Fun, eh? :-) -Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Feb 2004 18:07:30 -0500 From: Mike Shetzer To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Removing vocals Message-ID: <001e01c3e9e1$55d28800$9b00a8c0@mizz> --Boundary_(ID_WgHu0FR3Gx4b0TjznEF9Qw) Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: 7BIT Actually OpenMG jukebox, the program that came with my minidisc player and I likewise use to transfer songs to and from my MD has a feature when listening to mp3's to cut out the vocals. Sorta like a filter / EQ setting, and doesn't work perfectly, but is interesting when it does. ----- Original Message ----- From: Dan Costello To: Multiple recipients of list Sent: Monday, February 02, 2004 4:39 PM Subject: RE: Removing vocals >My sister going to get married in the summer and there are going to be a lot >of PROG heads. This is the excess album. The songs keep getting longer, the solos don't stop, the lyrics define cliche and the concerts light shows keep getting bigger. I find myself liking parts of songs. This hasn't happened before. I liked everything DT had done before SfaM. I don't place much weight on lyrics but SfaM was just too cheesy for me. I listen to individual songs but won't attempt the full album. 6DoiT was a bit of an improvement. But lately it just seems DT uses songs as an excuse to shred, and the members don't work together as much. I like instrumental sections as much as anyone but now it seems like there's a formula guitar solo/key solo/guitar and keyborad sync run. That said they're one of my favorite bands and will gladly see them in concert as long as they come to the Fla.-Ga. area.
