Why do the sound engineers insist upon blasting the music to such level that earplugs are required? IMO, the best-sounding concerts I've been to are the ones that HAVEN'T required earplugs. There are a couple reasons for this. Aside from the obvious pain of loud volumes, audio fidelity decreases as the PA is pushed to its limits. I've heard a theory about why people want the PA cranked - not only is the music louder, but the distortion in the amps and the speakers makes it SOUND louder. The masses don't associate crystal-clear audio with high volume; they associate loud volumes w/ audio breakup. Thus, when the AE pushes the amps to near-clipping, he not only increases the actual volume, but also the perceived volume. We musical connosieurs (sp?), on the other hand, value high-fidelity sound reinforcement over distorted chest thumping mud. I thought the peak of the audio quality during the Holmdel NJ show was during QR's "Take Hold of the Flame," which they played about 1/2=way through their set. That had good volume and good clarity. From there, the AE proceeded to push the system into distorting. -Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 18:47:26 -0400 From: "=?iso-8859-1?Q?Hombr=E9 Scott M." Been a lurker here for a couple of months. Good to see a few DT fans here down under, although not enough for bands like DT and Rush to ever come here. I've been hooked on DT for about 8 years, ever since my mate played 'Take the Time' to me. I was blown away by their tightness, remarkable musical skills and that it was the f@#king best sound I had heard in ages. I hope you guys don't take concerts like these for granted because realistically I know I'll never get to see them live. I missed out on seeing Queen when they were here and I way missed Led Zeppelin, my other top ranked band. (sigh) We had t be content with going along to cover bands to hear some great music live. Oh well, at least I got to see Satriani. As for loudest concerts, my loudest was my first (doesn't it always hurt the first time??). There were times in that Cheap Trick concert where I thought my head was physically being lifted off my shoulders. Ears rang for a week. Lying in bed that night was like trying to sleep next to a jet engine. Anyway Alexis, you've got about another 4 days of bells in your ears. Cheers, George. > > >I hope it does go away gradually.
