Oh, and some guy tried to steal an armful of videos on a day when the shop was surrounded by angsty spikey people in black, not to mention the extra security and the ambulance in attendance. *And* he wasn't wearing a shirt, which isn't the best way of being unobtrusive. Smart move. It was appreciated for the entertainment value. I almost didn't get into the concert itself. It was in a licensed venue - I didn't know this - and, having had my wallet stolen a short while ago, had no id on me. After ranting about travelling interstate especially for the concert, paying for tickets, first time they had ever played in the country etc rar rar rar, they let me in. I was about ready to start crushing heads, so it was for the best. The concert started out with a local band called Flesh Mechanic, which were...well...how did you put it, Niall? Oh yeah - Shit. I was up the front and glad of my earplugs. Totally random noise. Apparently the Adelaide gig gets Chalice instead, for which my friends were profoundly jealous. They were followed by Alchemist, which was a much better show, though a bit muddy. At least they had a beat. As for Opeth themselves, by that time I had unfortunately lost my place up the front, but still had a good view with the added bonus of not being crushed and trodden on. I'm not crash hot on track names yet, so I can't recall the exact setlist (please don't eat me if I'm wrong), but they started out with tracks from Blackwater Park - Leper Affinity followed by Bleak, which were awesome. Also played was Deliverance, a Fair Judgement, Advent, and the Funeral Portrait, among others. Their choice for the mellow song of the night, Credence, wasn't the best - I'd have preferred to hear the Face of Melinda, To Bid You Farewell, or (my absolute favourite Opeth number) the Harvest. But still ok. They didn't play any of Damnation, but apparently they are doing a separate tour for it. Given the nature of the warmup bands, I don't think Damnation would have fitted in with the general mood of the concert. What they did play was absolutely spot on, and fabulously well done. Worth a salute. The best thing, I think, was how surprised they were at the crowd's enthusiasm. I don't know what they were expecting, but they got a screaming mob. I think it's partly due to the fact that we don't get many gigs of that kind here, so when they does come, the fans are really hungry for it. Hopefully when they get out of Australia they will spread the word that we've got a much more hardcore fanbase for this kind of music than otherwise suspected. Their encore, after teasing us for a good five minutes of non-appearance, was the Demon of the Fall, which was a fitting end, and I went home tired and with about 30% hearing. Twelve hours later I was still only back up to about 70% and my neck still aches ;-P Great night all round. To sum up...I'm not quite ready to get an Opeth 'O' to match the majesty tattoo on my back, but I appreciate them a hell of a lot more after hearing them live :-) -- Karyn PS Mike - in case you haven't got a legit copy of Damnation yet, that track Closure is supposed to cut off suddenly the way it does :-) _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail now available on Australian mobile phones. Wow. I haven't been this impressed by a band in a while. Before listening to the cd, I was expecting their sound to be power metalish with some prog tendencies, but when I heard the cd I noticed that my expectations were mistaken. I would describe their sound as Dream Theater with a little bit of Lemur Voice and with Ralf Scheepers on vocals (it's not really him, but reminds me a lot of him). Very highly recommended. I posted a message back in February i think it was when I first got the CD too. It is QUITE delectable. They have a tendency to take songs that you would expect to be too power metal-y and fill them to the top with great harmonies and melodic parts to the max. Did you notice the striking similarity between Prophecy of the Pleiades (or whatever the last song is called) and Learning to Live? I especially find the verse bassline similar and the line "... with confidence and self control". I was just tempted to write the guitarist rocks, but I just listened again and I correct my statement with the guitarist, bassist, keyboardist and drummer rocks :) ----- Original Message ----- From: Alexis Ramos To: Multiple recipients of list Sent: Tuesday, April 15, 2003 10:24 AM Subject: Pagan's Mind I recently got the latest Pagan's Mind cd Celestial Entrance, and it kicks major ass.
