If the average cd price is $14.64, it's because big discount stores like Wal*Mart and Best Buy use them as loss-leaders to get people in the store. Stores that actually have to make money off of cds still charge $17+ And they list concerts as competing entertainment, but not movie rentals or purchases. Neither of those prices have risen much at all in the last 50-10 years. Blockbuster may have gone up a dollar or so, but i think DVDs are actually selling cheaper than VHS tapes were. -Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Jan 2003 10:40:39 -0600 From: "Robert Newcomb" To: Subject: BTW Message-ID: <000d01c2bf10$5ab098a0$message_id_removed> I got the new Strapping Young Lad EP today. This will re-introduce the band to college radio. The first two tracks (Devour and Aftermath) are alternative mixes from the originals coming out on the new full length album. (Oh My Fucking God) from the album Sleep is on here. Live versions of "In the Rainy Season" and "Detox" round out the EP. The album is out Feb. 11th. Anyone getting horny yet?:) BTW. . . has anyone heard of a band on Century Media called Absu? Their latest album was in the racks last night at my record store and I almost bought it. However beign a college student I don't have the $$$ to just try something that costs $15 bucks. Any opinions? I live within walking distance of that store and it rocks. Great progressive and metal section, but their search engine on their site leaves a lot to be desired. I had the privelege of seeing Opeth last night, and oh BOY they put on a great show. Instead of giving spoiler warnings, check out the Random Thoughts part of my webpage below if you want a peek at the setlist. These guys put on a great show, go see them if you can, you won't regret it! =3D) The opening bands were Moonlyght (a decent local metal group that took over for Lacuna Coil), Tapping the Vein and Paradise Lost (two bands I REALLY didn't think belonged in a show with Opeth. I think they played the wrong musical style for this particular show). Downloaded "Devour" from Century Media's site. Dunno if I like it quite as much as the assorted "City" tracks, but, then, I haven't heard it nearly as much. >BTW. . . has anyone heard of a band on Century Media called Absu? Absu is great. They're not on Century Media, however, although I believe their latest, 'Tara', was distributed in the US by Olympic...who are distributed by Century Media. They describe themselves as "Texas blackened thrash", so don't expect clean vocals. The music is exactly as the description goes: thrash coupled with black metal, with the emphasis more on fast, old-Slayer-style thrash. Very talented musicians all around, particularly the drummer (who also does vocals). Lyrically is where the black metal influence make its presence most known: pagan themes and ancient legend abound. They're the sort of lyrics where you can assume "magic" will be spelled "magick." 'Tara' is a concept album about some hill in (pre-?) medieval Scotland, complete with bagpipes. This site has links to all the official Absu websites (for whatever reason, they decided multiple sites was better than one): http://www.absu.ws/ You should be able to find some samples. Prelusion to Absu, at least, has two tracks from 'Tara'. That has all changed dramatically, as result of a gift of In Abenstentia I am very impressed with this disc and I now think Porcupine Tree is wonderful! There is so much to love, lyrics, interesting sounds, production, drums, I could go on and on. (I wouldn't want someone to give up on this wonderful band just because it doesn't appear after a search request on the internet.) Within Temptation's "Enter" is truly great B&B metal, but the newest one, "Mother Earth" is just Sharon singing alone. After Forever is another great B&B band. - Dave --- TREVOR HOIT wrote: > > > >I couldn't stand cookie monster vocals until someone sent me some > >Amorphis in one the Ytsejam tape trades of years past.
