Message-ID: <000301c2b79c$7294f0e0$message_id_removed.au> Hello, 1. I bought Devin Townsend's new one, Terria. It's the first album by Devin I've bought and I fucking love it, especially Mountain, Earth Day, Canada, The Fluke and Stagnant. The next album I should by is Ocean Machine, right? What are Physicist and Infinity like? I like the idea of the brass section and other instrumentation on Infinity. 2. Rhapsody's Legendary Tales was great, Symphony of Enchanted Lands was awesome. Dawn Of Victory and Rain Of A Thousand Flames however, were rather dissapointing. Is Power Of The Dragon Flame any good? Considering that I love the more progressive songs with the epic, sweeping orchestral moments, over the straight ahead melodic, speed metal sections. Are any of Luca Turilli's or Alex Staropoli's solo ablums worth picking up? 3. Is it just me, or is Porcupine Tree's new album In Absentia absolutely fucking AWESOME!? As much as I've liked PT's earlier albums (Stupid Dream, Signify and Lightbulb Sun being my favs over the more spacey, ambient earlier ones), I've always thought PT could have done with a shot of adrenaline in their music - right in the heart, Uma Thurman style. And with IA, they've done it! Easily their heaviest and most aggressive release to date. I think I read somewhere that Steve Wilson was hanging with the guys from Opeth, maybe that explains it. This is probably my vote for album of the year so far, seconded by Terria. These guys need interational exposure and recognition NOW! I can see this album sloting itself in nicely to at least a few radio stations over here in Australia. 4. Did anyone enjoy Enchant's new one, Blink Of An Eye? Some parts of it are cool, but overall it was pretty dissapointing. Break didn't do much for me, so I stayed away from Juggling 9 Dropping 10. I freaked when I saw that Paul Craddick wasn't drumming on BOAE - he's one of the most underrated drummers of all time, along with Sean Reinert. I have BPOTW, I love it. I'm looking at getting the Time Lost EP/Wounded double set. Worth it? 5. Threshold's new one, Critical Mass is fairly average. Some great moments again, but overall it's nothing significant. Pychadelicatessan however was very cool, same with Extinct Instinct, and I did prefer Glynn Morgan's vox to Damian Wilson. What are Hypothetical and Clone like? Is Wounded Land worth checking out? 6. Is the new Meshuggah any good? I have Contradictions Collapse/None, but I was hesitant to pick up Chaosphere as I've heard it's far too technical and inaccessible. Any other good Meshuggah discs? 7. Are there better digest mode mailing lists other than Ytsejam? (excluding TEOF) Luke. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 09 Jan 2003 00:54:18 -0500 From: WB Henderson To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Some comments / queries / thoughts... Message-ID: >Are any of Luca Turilli's or Alex Staropoli's solo ablums worth picking up? "King of the Nordic Twilight" is a quality disc. It can easily go toe-to-toe with any Rhapsody album. Dunno about the new one. >4. Did anyone enjoy Enchant's new one, Blink Of An Eye? Some parts of it are >cool, but overall it was pretty dissapointing. While I haven't heard this album yet, I must say the new tracks they played live at last year's NEARfest did not impress me. To tell the truth, their whole set at last year's NEARfest was disappointing. IMO, Enchant's been going downhill since their first album. >I'm looking at getting the Time Lost EP/Wounded double set. Worth it? "Time Lost" alone is worth buying. "Wounded" is alright, certainly a decent bonus when tacked onto "Time Lost." >What are Hypothetical and Clone like? Is Wounded Land worth checking out? "Wounded Land" is my favorite Threshold disc, but it's Damian Wilson's show. If you don't like his voice (which shouldn't be judged by "Extinct Instinct"), you won't like that one. "Clone" and "Hypothetical" are similar, with "Clone" being the better of the two. >Any other good Meshuggah discs? You'll definitely want to grab "Destroy Erase Improve" - it's somewhat of a middle-ground between "Contradictions Collapse" and "Chaosphere." You have to get all of them, doesn't matter. Including all the Strapping Young Lad, cause Gene Hoglan RULES!! > 3. The new one in general has slightly more groove than Chaosphere with the highlight to me being Nothing... but Chaosphere is just noise... too much science and not enough music... -The Doc -- -------------- http://www.zeromemory.com - metal for your ears. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 9 Jan 2003 03:50:35 -0800 (PST) From: Peter Geerts To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Some comments / queries / thoughts... Although no Rhapsody album has beaten SoEL yet, I do think Power of the Dragonflame is better than Dawn of a victory... more complex and symphonic. Gotta love those albumtitles though:-) --- WB Henderson wrote: > >What are Hypothetical and Clone like? I strongly disagree with you here. For the sake of balance: IMO Hypothetical is the best of the three Andrew McDermott albums, and I think they took a step back with Critical Mass... I still prefer Damian on Extinct Instinct though. The most complex and original Threshold album to date. Why do you think Damian's voice isn't representative on Extinct Instinct BTW? At any rate, he comes off sounding better to my ear on "Wounded Land" (and assorted Ayreon songs). Might anybody be able to recommend some that I could check out? I remember hearing a piece once that had some really cool rock organ stuff in it. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Note though, that this is different than asking what your FAVORITE Zappa is ;-) I imagine were I to do that, I get pointed to the "corn hole" song.. This time around I'm looking for the more progressive stuff he's done. Thanks all!!
