Last night this kid I never talk to calls me to > say he just found this random band I *have* to hear. I asked what they > sounded like and he said "Dream Theater up a notch, theyre called Opeth." It's a sign! It's a portent! It's also...a fairly inexact comparison! If one's musical diet consists of just smooth vocals, Opeth might not be welcome in your pantry, as Mikael A.'s extreme-metal vox could be too much of a shock. > So now Im even more curious and will be going to the record store as soon as > I get up tomorrow. I'd have suggested listening to some MP3's first, unless you're familiar with extreme-metal vox. Quite a few people are now getting into that genre through Opeth -- I did, a few years back -- but I'm not sure if I would have embraced it if I'd gone into it "cold." :) > By the way, going back a while, all those people who were badmouthing the jam > scene and Phish and whatnot, did anyone who said theyd try out a few songs > ever post anything about it? Many of my friends diss the jam-band scene, but having heard some of the bands involved, I won't. There's certainly merit to the scene, although it's not my usual thing. :) I'm a fan of Ozric Tentacles, who are not a jam-band per se, but draw a lot of fans from that scene because they're taper-friendly. The only blemish on jam-bands, in my own limited experience, was a band with a really pissy attitude: the Disco Biscuits, for whom the Ozrics opened once. They sounded pretty good, actually, but they definitely didn't have a laid-back approach to staging or production! :( -- +--- Paul W. If you're that interested in it, you could probably contact PBS and find out. -Dan. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jan 2003 08:46:25 -0600 From: "Souter, Jan-Michael" To: "'ytsejam@torchsong.com'" Subject: RE: The Tribe Message-ID: Nothing wrong with watching partially-clothed teenagers with weird makeup and strange hairdos walking around... oh wait, what am I saying?? :)) I've browsed a few episodes and one of the kids looks just like a younger Heath Ledger.
