For me it breathes new life into a metal genre that had > gotten really stale. Opeth are one of the best discoveries I've made in the last three years, and I can honestly say they've triggered a paradigm shift in my musical tastes: I'd never given death- and black-metal the time of day before, but now I've gotten really into the melodic/progressive bands in the genre and do a largely extreme-metal radio show here. And it's all Opeth's fault. :) If you like Deliverance, you really -do- need to get Blackwater Park, Still Life and then work backwards from there. Also note that their mellower CD, DAMNATION, is due out in March/April. My current fave is Blackwater Park, followed closely by either Morningrise or My Arms, Your Hearse depending on my mood. :) Someone asked about tour dates. This is reallly timely! Their US tour starts on January 18th in Mass. and concludes -- apparently -- in California on Feb. 3rd. Their website, at www.opeth.com, has all the dates. Unfortunately there are no Southeastern dates and it's basically just a swing across the northern tier from east to west. I keep hoping they'll add a date closer to Atlanta, but it looks grim. I'd post the dates, but their website is annoying and doesn't seem to allow copy-paste. I must toss in a nice comment or two about Opeth's Mikael Akerfeldt, too. Not only is he reallly cool in person and totally unpretentious, but he's also "one of us" in many ways. I had a feeling he'd be kewl when I read that, like me, he was an Ozric Tentacles fan. :) -- +--- Paul W.
