YTSEJAM Digest 6387 Today's Topics: 1) Fw: Planet X rocked the house- SPOILERS by Mike Shetzer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 00:13:23 -0500 From: Mike Shetzer To: erpnotes Subject: Fw: Planet X rocked the house- SPOILERS Message-ID: <000d01c2969c$dff47640$9b00a8c0@SHETZ> --Boundary_(ID_9WPRxak8pE7V7NLubEoPlQ) Content-type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-transfer-encoding: quoted-printable So here I was, finishing my classes for the day when my friend called me and said he hooked up tickets for the Planet X show here in montreal tonight. I went with a few guys and luckily we got nice spots (place was sold out. Great considering last time I had so much legroom I felt uncomfortable :P) and proceeded to watch the opening band, Heaven's Cry, a local prog metal group that featured three guitarists, one of whom played an acoustic guitar the whole set. Weirdly enough, their CD's aren't available here but only in Europe. Weird the way this prog community worked... Anyways, after about a 30 minute set, they left. Good show! =3D) Then the big boys came on in. Too bad my camera wasn't working... Anyways, they played about 10 songs or so, totalling about 75 minutes. First of all, who is their touring bassist? I'm pretty sure it wasn't Dave LaRue or Tom Kennedy or Tony Franklin, who have all either toured with them or played on their records. Secondly, WOW! Virgil did a 10-15 solo of insane drumwork, Derek in his solo played some Lines In The Sand. Too bad only like 5-10 people recognized it... Tony's solo was INSANELY fast chromatic scalework and fingertapping like never before seen. The bassist had a lovely solo too where he recorded a funky groove and then solo'd over it. After the show they sold some CD's and the band was there to sign tickets, posters and merchandise. Too bad there were no T-shirts... I chatted with Derek, Tony and Virgil, they all seemed like nice people, however Virgil seemed either shy or that he didn't really want to be there. After playing a 15 minute solo I guess would rather be doing something else too! 8-) If you get a chance to see these bad boys, DO IT! You won't be disappointed. Disclaimer: While planet X may be insanely polyrhythmic and complex, it will probably not appeal to people who don't appreciate extreme self-indulgence. When you know how to play stuff this well, you pretty much gotta show it off!
