Of course it really doesn't have a lot to do with Rush. It has more to do with one of my favorite rants: digital limiting. The wonders of the digital revolution. His audio spectrum graphs are good examples. Nothing like a good, unending, ear-numbing wall of sound. Wouldn't want anything like a little "open space" for contrast. The best short summary from the article: "the latest trend is LOUDER IS BETTER. This approach basically ignores any distortion caused by limiting and seeks to make the audio as loud as possible. The idea is to peg the meters and keep them pegged. As a result the signal is just ruined." I agree. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Try being an audiophile and dealing with many of today's recordings. The guy that wrote the article knows what he's talking about... And if you really want to add to the agony, listen with some quality gear that's detailed enough to really make the flaws stand out. Keven Shirley ruined SDOIT, IMHO. There are no quiet passages whatsoever, and the dynamic range is mediocre at best. Terry Brown did a bang up job of destroying several tracks on Fates Warning's "Disconnected" as well. What a shame.. That's something that can never be corrected without starting over from the master tapes. (Assuming they didn't fuck them up with poor recording techniques) That was a good read, Rick! Message-ID: Thanks Rick for posting that link to the digest. I read it and thought it pretty close to my own personal feelings (but with more hard data). I recently decided to take my copy of Vapor trails on a trip and when I decided it was time to dig into the new rush and "rock out" I was underwhelmed by the experience and went ont to something else. I typically rank my cd listening experince as 30% production value, 60% musical composition and 10% Lyrical content. Hell, I'll almost listen to bad music thats been recorded well... but even great music thats been recorded or produced poorly is a chore to listen to. I suggest reading that article if nothing else than for your own self edification. With modern digital recording and even some not so hitech equipment readily avalable making a good recording shouldn't be that hard. Its that damn human factor again....
