POS - Remedy Lane I think this is probably their best cd so far. 1. DT - 6DOIT Awesome album. Love both cds. 3. Rhapsody - Power of the Dragon Flame This is one heck of an album. Some might find Rhapsody to be repetitive (sort of the same way some think Symphony X sounds pretty much the same throughout every album), but I believe this release is a masterpiece and that these guys are great songwriters, even if their style doesn't change much with time. There's enough hooks in this album to catch a whole school of fish. They are IMO the best power metal band right now, probably tied with the following band in my list. 4. Blind Guardian - A Night at the Opera Incredible power metal. Probably the power metal band with the most distinct style of them all. Their latest release is another masterpiece. 5. All That I Bleed - Dying to Remember One of the best new prog metal bands out there. These guys have great musicianship, great songwriting and great melodies. 6. Planet X - Live from OZ I know there's not much new music here because it's a live album, but this cd is still amazing and needs to be in the best of 2002. Excellent sound, amazing performance, and with one of my favorite bass players filling in the bass duties (Dave LaRue). Kickass. Honorable mentions so far: - Superior - Ultima Ratio Very good cd, but for some reason hasn't really floored me as I expected it to. It's still great, but I think that what's missing is that it's a bit more predictable than their previous 2 efforts. - Steve Morse Band - Split Decision Excellent cd by the guitar master, with amazing performances by Dave LaRue and Van Romaine. - Shaman - Ritual Great cd. Sounds a lot like Angra, but I think pales in comparison when comparing it to Holy Land (what can you expect when comparing it to such an amazing album?). Still a very solid release with excellent vocals and musicianship, although I think that the new guitarist isn't as good as Bittencourt and Louriero. Guest performances by Derek Sherinian (solo on Over Your Head, the best song on the album) and Tobias Sammet (sings backing vocals on I don't know which tracks, and shares lead vocals on Pride). - Angra - Hunters and Prey Excellent ep by the the other part of the puzzle. For some reason Angra sounds to me more spontaneous, original and catchy than Shaman. The title track of this ep is among the best songs Angra has written (there's also a portuguese version included in the ep). Whereas Shaman sounds to me like they couldn't find a replacement that could be as good as the 2 guitarists they lost (Hugo Mariutti is still very good, don't get me wrong), Angra found 3 replacements that are at least as good as the members they lost. - Rush - Vapor Trails Very good release by the legends. This album seems to be less proggy than TFE, but it has a catchiness and awesome songwriting that makes up for it. Upon first listen I was a bit disappointed, but, after repeated listenings, I was hooked. It seems to get a bit more complicated after repeated listenings, since the intricacies are more subtle than before, but they're still there. Alright, that was long enough. The only thing I don't like about the second disc is that they ruin a perfectly good song, "Solitary Shell" with mindless wanking at the end. The radio edit is actually better. John Myung didn't get anything on this album. That sucks. What I found surprising is that James actually wrote some good stuff. I'm powerless in their presence. :-) To put some of my comments in perspective, I agree with what you say above, except I love all of The Gathering's stuff. I haven't heard any Fatima Hill. If you meant "Amaran" for "Araran", then I can heartily recommend "A World Depraved." (Don't know if they've got any others or not.) They're more melodic/song-oriented than most of the female-gothish-metal crowd, so if you like Ambeon and Edenbridge, I'd say you'd dig them. Amaran's heavier than those two; like a faster version of The Gathering's Mandylion, or a less-Alice-in- Chainsy version of Drain STH (ok, maybe not quite that heavy. But heavy.) On to the "other suggestions"... By "bored of The Gathering after 3 discs"... do you mean you had just heard enough and wanted some variety, or that you didn't like their more recent (less metal, more post-rock/psychy) output? If the basic sound of HTMaP and ITE didn't bother you (or you like similar bands, like Persephone's Dream), then you mustmustmust buy "Yaishi" by the band "Moonlight". I've listened to it at least once a day since I bought it over a month ago. Their sound is all over the place; centered on the standard goth-metal sound, but mixed with a little Persephone's Dream, a little "Choirgirl Hotel" period Tori, and even a little Sigur Ros. Wonderful stuff, and one of the better singers in the genre. My favorite purchase so far this year (to tie this into that other thread, kind of... it's actually 2001 (c).) Since you like the more over-the-top presentation of Nightwish & Edenbridge, I'd say you'd really need to check out "Mother Earth" by Within Temptation. I have yelled myself hoarse singing along to this on more than one occasion. Their singer, Sharon den Adel, was on Ayreon's ItEC as "the Indian". "Mother Earth" is all Sharon; their earlier albums are in the so-called "beauty-and-the- beast" style of soprano female & death-metal-growling male. Very similar in flavor to Within Tempation is another Dutch band called After Forever. (AF's closer to Edenbridge, WT's closer to Nightwish). Again, B&B style, with one female soprano (Floor Jansen, another Ayreon alumnus) and two males (credited with "grunts" and "screams" in the liner notes). They've got a more operatic/symphonic/progressive approach than most in the genre. Both albums are good, but I give a slight edge to the more-recent "Decipher". Though Sharon from WT guests on one track on "Prison of Desire," and a Sharon/Floor duet is a good thing. Other must-haves in the genre, in approximate order of awesomeness: * The Third and The Mortal - get any of their Kari Rueslatten-led stuff, but especially "Tears laid in Earth". Not really similar to anything mentioned above. Lineup is guitar-guitar-guitar-bass-drums-vox; no keys. Norwegian band. Maybe skip this if you don't like Mandylion; it's kinda trancey/slow metal in the same fashion. * Lacuna Coil - start with "Unleashed Memories". Get the "special edition" that includes their earlier EP, "Halflife." Maybe skip this one if you don't like Mandylion/Nighttime Birds-type The Gathering. Italian band; one track on Unleashed Memories/Halflife is in the native tongue. * Tristania - start with "World of Glass" or "Beyond the Veil". B&B, but the male doesn't annoy me as much as most growlers do. Norwegian band; heavier stuff again. Lots of string-sound synth work. * Artrosis - start with "In the Flowers' Shade". Polish band; the singer's got a bit of an accent. Catchy as hell, though. * On Thorns I Lay - start with "Crystal Tears". Probably the closest to actual "goth" of the stuff listed; less metal than even Ambeon. Includes some pretty slick viola playing. Greek band. * Nightsky Bequest - "Keep the Lonely Trees". Musicianship's quite a bit better than the rest of the pack; more "prog." Bulgarian band. * Delight - start with "The Fading Tale". Another Polish band; no silly accent. A bit heavier again; lots of keyboard work. Pretty close to the "average" sound for the genre. Includes a so-serious-it's-funny goth-metal cover of George Michael's "Careless Whisper". * Chalice - try "An Illusion to the Temporary Real". Two females; one sings, the other plays flute. Australian band. * Theater of Tragedy - try "Aegis". Norwegian B&B-style stuff. Hm. No USA'ans. We must suck at this sort of music. Oh well; at least we can import it. Other probably-avoidable stuff in the genre: * Sinphonia - Dream Theater clone (?!) with an average female singer. * Dominion - too much Beast, not enough Beauty. * Dreams of Sanity - "Komodia" isn't bad, but isn't good. The following albums go downhill really fast. * The Sins of Thy Beloved - released on "Napalm Records". B&B with a pretty obnoxious male singer. OK if you like death/doom stuff, I suppose. * Morgana's Kiss - I'm going to sell this disc. Singer sucks eggs through a cocktail straw. Other female-fronted bands who aren't "goth metal", but who are worth the effort: * Renaissance - Annie Haslam. 'nuff said. Oh, that's not 'nuff? Sorry. Romantic-era-classical-influenced prog from the 70's. Great piano work, bass guitar playing lead (or, at least as much lead as the piano lets him have), acoustic guitar playing rhythm, drums, 80-piece orchestra on all the "good" albums, and Annie Haslam, the best vocalist ever. Beautiful folky voice, and a legitimate 5-octave range. One of the few bands for whom a "greatest hits" collection actually contains really good stuff; I'd start with the two "Tales of 1001 Nights" discs. * Nexus - get "Detras del Umbral". Argentinian band; all vox in Spanish. Unabashed "Yes" clone with a great female singer. When she Rrrrolls her Rrrr's, I melt. * White Willow - Norse folk-prog band. Quirky and good. Try "Ex Tenebris" or "Sacrament." Sacrament is one of the discs I use for showing off the stereo equipment; immaculate production. * Therion - not specifically female-fronted. Take one straight-ahead metal band, remove singer, add 4-male/6-female choir and a chamber string section. Mentioned here because the song "Clavicula Nox" on the album "Vovin" is one of the better female-voiced metal tunes out there. Other stuff on the album is also excellent.
