Here's my take on last night's stellar DT gig at Coliseu (surely not the coolest venue around btw). It basically floored me like no other live concert had done in a couple of months. I got really excited about it when I first learnt that they would be paying us a visit 'gain (I've been a DT fan for a while now as you all know!) but I wasn't expecting them to deliver the goods as exquisitely as they eventually did yesterday. And DO bear in mind that I've been to lotsa live shows before and still can honestly say that few have impressed quite as much as this one... dunno why it amazed this much but something about it just blew me away in ways words cannot describe. It POSITIVELY rocked out BIG TIME!!! It was truly a great, pumping, blazing live show... and I even got to chat (even though we only exchanged a few words) with the guys from DT right after the show. They were refreshingly nice and thoughful... James was particularly cool btw! Here's what they played : Glass Prision 6:00 Another Hand/The Killing Hand Burning My Soul '96 (Original Demo) Fatal Tragedy John Petrucci's solo spot Scarred/tiny bits of Rush's 2112 The Great Debate Pull Me Under (10-minute intermission) Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence The Spirit Carries On Learning to Live James is singing a lot better these days, he hit all the high notes and he didn't screech half as much as he used to do back in the now legendary Image & Words days. He just couldn't stand still, he spent the whole gig cruising the stage! Jordan's playing was immaculate and his soloing DID NOT come across as being blatantly redundant or pathetically cheesy (there are way too many Jordan bashers who say this all the time... I'd just like to shoot them all...LOL). I may be biased as hell (I'll the first one to admit it actually) but I don't give a damn... He's a great performer and one of my personal favorite ivory ticklers of all time (and yes, I'm perfectly aware that there are other equally talented players out there!). Petrucci played with the kind of restraint I hadn't heard from him in recent times, he didn't waste too much time aimlessly shredding around like he had done a couple of times before. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE his playing (we're talking about the man who made me want to become a serious player) but I hate it when he sacrifices a perfectly good musical idea for the sake of speed. I guess he's finally growing out of it... Portnoy was clearly enjoying himself and he did a great job bashing those skins. Oh... I've also gotta say that John Myung played beautifully as well, he's a mighty groove keeper! .. All in all, their performance was virtually flawless (with some minor, meaningless, barely noticeable duds) and totally inspiring... I'm SO glad I was there to witness it all, I wouldn't have missed it for the world (Pat Metheny's coming up next week... Oh yeah, that's going to be GREAT!!! And I'll even get to see B=E9la Fleck & The Flecktones next month too... geee, things are definitely going my way!). Hope I didn't bore you too much with this giddy review of mine... " Caught in a Web Normally a crappy little web shop like Dream Theater wouldn't be worthy of a mention on FC, but they stole their name from my favorite band, so fuck em. Go figure.......... I live in the south of France, every single year (and sometimes twice a year is DT comes again and my bank allows it) I've to go either to Paris or Lyon. Last time it was Barcellona. That makes for 7-10 hour car trips each time. My BEST year being SFAM tour with France (twice because they were in Lyon a few months before before the actual SFAM show), Germany & Italy. I don't have a clue how it is in the states though and I'm sure we can find the worst (best ?!) "on the road for DT junkie" here. Who has the record for number of shows and miles in a year for DT ? Easyjet do cheap flights from Nice to London, and from there on to Barcelona, Amsterdam, etc. There's no need to drive. :-) -- Graham Borland email_address_removed ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 6234 ************************** === Contributions to ytsejam: ytsejam@torchsong.com === === Send requests to: ytsejam-request@torchsong.com === === Brought by the ghost of ytsejam@arastar.coms past === === Reach the owner of this list at: ytsejam-owner@torchsong.com ===
