What has to be considered is the STYLE of music the person is performing. If a Britney Spears type pop song comes on the radio, and a Portnoy type drum performance accompanies it, THAT would be overplaying. The drummer is not playing what should be played for that style. However, in a PROGRESSIVE METAL band (for lack of a better term), that drum part would probably fit perfectly. Therefore it is not overplaying. Bach and Mozart ran scales up and down the keyboard in a lot of the music they wrote. Yngwie, anyone?? i think the point we're all trying to get at here is that there is such a thing as overplaying, if it doesn't fit within the structure of the music that it's accompanying. another good point to add would be this: most people see minimalism as some form of almost enlightened attitude when it comes to playing music. i never have & never will understand or agree with this train of thought. there were quite a few friends of mine back in college who were die-hard powerpop players (i.e.- The Strokes, Beck, Oasis, Weezer, etc.) who preached 3 & 4 chord songs with nothing but a repetitive beat in 2 or 4 (generic backbeat included for good measure). the guitar solos, if they were even existent, consisted of 3-5 notes on the same damn string over & over. the singers couldn't sing more than an octave in either direction, and sung in the monotonous drone that is so prevelant in that genre. anyhow, the point of all this is as follows: when these guys would hear bands like Dream Theater, Yes, Rush, Bozzio/Levin/Stevens, even guys like Satriani, Vai, or Vinnie Moore, they would scoff and pick at everything about it. things like- 1. that guy can't sing at all, 2. that guitarist is just wankering, 3. that drummer can't keep a steady rhythm, he's always jumping around, (or, my favorite) 4. these guys have NO talent. i always thought that was funny, borderline hysterical, coming from guys who are playing some of the most repetitive, musically boring stuff out there. granted, whatever kind of music "pops your turtle" is completely an issue of preference, but to say they have NO talent!!?? these guys not only know everything about their respective instruments, but can play circles around any of the cheese-rock 3 chord bands out there. as far as i'm concerned, the aforementioned progressive bands are full of CONSUMATE musicians, and the aforementioned powerpop bands are nothing but examples proving that ANYBODY can be in a band & sell a record, regardless of the knowledge that they have of writing & playing music. reminds me of the story of the fox & the grapes. all the fox wanted was to get his pawss on the grapes, but they were out of his grasp. once he realized he would never reach them, all he had were negative things to say about them. very similar to the powerpop-playing friends of mine. it's so much easier to scoff & make fun of something or someone who has a talent or gift that you will never possess rather than admire them for the gifted & talented person that they are, in this case musicians. is minimalism a superior approach & attitude towards music?? i think not. more like an excuse to hide behind because the minimalist's music is all that he is capable of producing. there's my rant. let the flames (or agreements) begin....... jammin' on, eric -- "The least important things in life get the most appreciation. Yngwie, anyone?? How are we defining overplaying - notes that don't fit the progression of a song? I've never heard Yngwie overplay... I've heard him underplay, but that's about it. Everything he plays flows out of the progression of the song; the fact that progressions are repetitive doesn't mean he's overplaying. Who else overplays, of the neoclassical guitarists? Macalpine, Stump, Moore? I think not... Vinnie Moore has written some of the coolest songs I've ever heard, with very few extraneous notes in there. To me, a good example of overplaying is EVH - most of the time he sounds like he doesn't even know which key he's in. Great technique, I won't argue with that, but his writing is pretty poor, at least in most songs. Vai overplays quite a bit too, albeit not as much. There are examples of it out there, but let's label things with their appropriate names. Just because there are a lot of notes in a certain riff or solo doesn't mean it's overplayed. Besides that, I'll agree with Eric on every point he made; in fact, I applaud that rant. - Ilia. P.S. Although i'm phasing out of my metal phase, i still enjoyed the music, and even the crowd wasn't so bad. But regardless the fan or the person, i do NOT see how any can think LaBrie sounds good. At the show in milwaukee, although the sound was a bit off, his vocals were still nauseating to me, and i couldn't imagine how anyone actually thinks he sounds even tolerable. You have to get past the idea that sure he hits notes that most guys can't. Just because it's difficult to do doesn't make it good. The other four members of Dream Theater have mastered the ability to do difficult things while still sounding awesome, but then they throw in a singer that not only makes me not want to go see Dream THeater again (as sad as that may be), but it prevents any or all possible chance the band ever had of reaching of a larger market. I know it's late in their career to think about a singer change, but i just wish that i could have had something to salvage as my favorite band. I guess i gotta stick to moe. and Ben Folds... sure they can't play like Dream Theater but at least I don't have to wince through another James LaBrie wail. okay... commence your bashing on me. It's difficult to explain... it's like some people liking the sound of distorted guitar, others liking acoustic... I've liked LaBrie since I first heard him back when I first listened to Images. I wasn't greatly impressed at first, but I thought he was decently good. And not only do I like the quality of his voice, I also appreciate it for how good he is at what he does. Just listen to Portnoy's backing vocals - he doesn't even come close! Makes me want to ask, what do you think of other metal vocalists? How about DC Cooper or Russell Allen? Or Phil Anselmo, particularly what he was doing back in the early 90s? Which singers do you like most, from other styles if not any from metal bands? This was the best they have ever sounded. The set lists were outstanding. If anyone doesn't like DT, they have never seen them live. Here is the Chicago set list both nites to the best of my ability. The sets were pretty close to the Barcelona, Spain shows. All the songs sounded amazing. I was most impressed with Glass Prison, Scarred and Killing Hand. These guys just rock. They said they would be back in the summer. I can't wait. What a set of nites.
