DT does NOT need to be on mtv...in fact, I'm glad my favorite band is someone no one ever listens to! It's awesome when I can play their music and someone actually thinks it sounds cool. Because they're freaking amazing! Even if they are ugly old guys who can't make good music videos...who cares! So Dr. Teeth, whoever you really are. You're cool because of what you just said. Message-ID: I am a first time poster who unfortunately has 5 acres of land in Knoxville, Tennessee. Dream Theater live for me, means a trip back home to Detroit to see my fav. band. They can play on my property ANY time. Why I moved here I'll never understand. I read on this list all the time about bands I would like to try, but with a new CD costing as much as one does, I rarely do. If the CDs' were sold new not sealed in plastic like they were when I was in Switzerland, I could try before I buy. Any Detroit DT fans on this list? Actually, I think concert T-shirt prices are on the rise all around - from what I remember, I think all the concerts I've been to within the last couple of years have been selling T-shirts for $25 to $30 here in the US, so I wouldn't say that you guys are getting screwed because of the new currency. In fact, I'm sure we'll even see higher prices in general as the years progress - I saw Journey last year and Iron Maiden the year before - both were selling "sports jersey" style shirts with the bands name and emblems on them for somewhere between $100 and $150 - I'd expect regular T's will be on the rise too. :( Scott ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 06:32:12 -0800 (PST) From: Alexis Ramos To: ytsejam Subject: vocal melodies + more Message-ID: About the vocal melodies, I disagree with the opinion that the melodies on the first albums were somehow better. I believe their melodies now are as strong as ever. The melodies on the song 6DoIT are especially great... Another thing. Once again, hasn't anybody noticed the similarity between the beginning of Solitary Shell and the beginning of the song "Sing for the day" by Styx? Definitely not a ripoff, but at least they have a very similar feel and sound. I heard samples of the song Solsbury Hill and the melodies do sound very similar to those in SS... I'll have to listen to the whole song to compare for myself. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Great stuff seeking new owners in Yahoo! Those are the ONLY videos I've seen when browsing though, that and retarded tv shows. The only time I see rock videos is on VH1. And I vote no on the video idea, and more radio play. They are hitting their target market already they don't need either. Do you really want to be bumping into people at a show that are told what to listen to by Mtv? chris ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 08:35:04 -0800 (PST) From: Ilia To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: vocal melodies + more Message-ID: I've been thinking about this. As a musician, one of the things that I dislike people telling me most when I write something and play it for them is something along the lines of "Were you listening to such-and-such by Led Zeppelin when you came up with that?" No, I was not. But the fact that something sounds good in one arrangement, by a band that was in its prime a decade before I was born, means that it will be repeated, with variations, in one form or another, by another writer. Such examples are profuse in everything from Bach to Bartok to Frank Sinatra to Dream Theater. A lot of the time people focus too much on something new sounding like something else from past compositions, and overlook many more important qualities in the new music. That's not to say that there are no rip-offs. Like that Kid Rock song that sounds like Metallica's "Sad But True." It is clearly the same chord progression, notes, and even guitar sound. On the other hand, there are songs such as Green Day's "Brain Stew," which uses the same chord progression as many musical pieces have over the years, but is clearly original enough to be judged on its own merit. What I'm trying to say here is, let's label Dream Theater as Dream Theater, and not by labels of songs that came before them. It is clear that DT members have had a multitude of influences and inspiration from the vast array of musicians that came before them, in every style from classical to blues to jazz to classic rock to hip-hop, and everything in between. I see no point reiterating that fact upon listening to every one of their new albums. "Enjoy the melodies," y'know? They use the same damn 12 notes everyone else uses. How pathetic is that? And they use the same instruments. I mean, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and vocals. That's been done to death already... If they were really great, they'd be inventing new instruments for their music, which would use all new notes. I mean, they're just ripping everybody off right now. If they can't invent new instruments, at the very least, they should make their own instruments and amps. Get this - you or I could buy the exact keyboard Jordan uses! Is that ridiculous? If he's such a keyboard wiz, why doesn't he build his own? And I hear some company named Yamaha builds Myung's basses. How very unoriginal.
