Remember, you chose to read this far so anything after this sentence you read is your own fault! The Glass Prison - Sounds like LTE meet good Metallica meet Pantera. Driving, energetic, Balls and Chunk with some great solos towards the end of the tune. JP and JR shread on this one. Nice little bass thingy for JM too. Blind Faith - For those who have heard the edited version, you got hosed! This song is bound to be a DT classic. Great melodies and a chorus that won't get out of my head sum up this song. Some great instrumental parts in the middle of the tune, with some great drumming from MP. An early fav. Misunderstood - Slower, gentler song with a strong chorus and melodies. Could easily be a radio hit, yet radio is clueless to good music. Some great keyboard sounds, sometimes eerie. Interesting ending to this one. The Great Debate - Pumping bass starts this one off. Some may call it Tool Theater, as there are some obvious influences on this track that debates stem cell research. Great effects on James' voice add to the frenzy. Another early Fav. Disappear - Well....this is the song that I never thought that DT would create. Beautiful textures by JP and JR give this track a spooky, dark, depressing feeling. This is unbelieveable stuff. Kinda like The Beatles meet Radiohead. The Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence - Here it is, the big one. I will not go into each part too deep. This is DT's finest work, hands down. The orchestration and melodies are Top notch! JRs keyboard work is unbelievable. Each part of the song has a different feel to it. From happy, to sad, to angry. I know this tune will be the focus of MUCH discussion in the near future. This is one of those songs that when it ends, you WANT to return to the begining and hear the whole thing again. James' vocals have never been better. This tune sums up the reason that DT is my favorite band, and has been since 1989. That's it. I am sure there will be better reviews than mine. I just wanted to share some of what I've heard with you. I can't wait till 1/29/01!!! The did not disappoint! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Check out Yahoo! Completely blew me away! This time around he played most of Passion and Warfare, which is his best work by a long way. Billy Sheehan really impressed me on bass; he did an incredible job of reinterpreting Stu Hamm's funky bits on Blue Powder, etc. I saw Devin Townsend in Glasgow on Sunday night. Very cool. His band is full of big fat hairy people, but the music was great nevertheless. Lots of the best stuff from all of his solo albums and Strapping Young Lad. I saw Tori Amos in Glasgow last Wednesday. I was ecstatic that she played Winter, which is one of my favourite songs ever. I love that woman. :-) -- Graham Borland Picsel Technologies Ltd email_address_removed Glasgow, Scotland ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 10:36:28 -0500 From: Cyberwolf To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Dream Theater MP3's... recommendations Message-ID: Well, from my understanding there are a few reasons behind the DT mp3 'fiasco', which I think the letter from MP succintly summed it up. Suffice to say, I can see both sides, and I only use (mostly) mp3's to determine if something is worth it's weight in my financial resource depleting. That said, I pretty much buy ANYTHING a band like DT, QR or FW put out (disregarding imports, and LIVE cd's for the most part). I think the main concern of the band was the lack of conscience and graciousness in addition to the dishonesty of the individual(s) releasing Mp3's of their music that hasn't been mastered, or released yet. I suppose legalities come into play at some point too, but while it is a paradox, afterall, the anticipation of the upcoming DT project is breached, and of course, increasing due to the Mp3. As for recommendation, Chris, how about Greyhaven (if you can find it), Persephone's Dream, F5, Digital Ruin, Spiral Achitect, Enchant, and Andromeda? Or even, VIRTUALITY? (see link below). Message-ID: <001901c1826b$c9d0cb20$ece0ca18@videotron.ca> Warning- POSSIBLE SPOILERS******* Warning- POSSIBLE SPOILERS******* Hey all. I recently gave up the urge to wait to hear new material from DT for another month, and downloaded the first disc of 6DOIT. While some songs caught my ear, my general impression, don't get me wrong, is slightly disappointed. Blind Faith and Glass Prison are without a doubt really cool songs, but they seem to be lacking something in the complexity department. Maybe I'm just talking out of my ass, but the album, while it was supposedly "experimental", seems to have lost some sort of progressive edge. If anyone has heard The Great Debate or Disappear, you might know what I mean. TGD has a nice theme of prez Bush in the beginning, but the song is too uninteresting to bear its 10+ minute length. Disappear reminds me of Space Dye Vest, which is a good thing, but for 6 minutes, the song isn't very interesting or complex either. Misunderstood sits somewhere in the middle, between interesting and not so much. My biggest critique is that Petrucci hasn't had a single melodic solo yet. The solos I've heard from JP are mostly shred, which isn't that bad, but I love Petrucci for his melodic, powerful solos, not his super fast ones. I'm actually using willpower not to look for the 40 minute title track =3D) Let's hope there's some When The Water Breaks or Dance Of Eternity styles in there, cuz I haven't heard any 19/16 rhythms from Portnoy just yet! Before I get flamed, I'll clearly state that this is merely a first impression and an opinion on what I've heard. I'd like to hear everyone else's opinions on the new tracks, if you've bothered to give them a listen. Message-ID: MIKE......... before you pass judgement, please get the 2nd Disc!!!! That's where some GREATNESS flows out of your stereo. I sat back and listened to the 2nd CD all the way through last night and wanted to spin it again but was already way past my bedtime! And Petrucci gets after it on the 2nd CD with tons of melody and great tasteful solos. Jordan adds in some great "atmosphere" to the songs that fits like a glove! I agree. As for being "exclusive" I think sending that info to this list would still meet the criteria, considering how many people we seem to still have around here these days :) There are plenty more (at least active) people on the mp forum by all accounts. And, for those of you just saying to suck it up and start visiting the forum, where the information is available, were you around here in this list's heyday? I know some of you were. I don't see why that has to change. And I hate web forums. Hate them. It is much nicer to get an email package of what's going on, than trying to navigate your way through different threads/responses on a webboard, particularly if your connection isn't always the friendliest. It's just much more user-friendly to get email delivery, at least IMO. Alex thought of the day: "The brain is a wonderful organ. I mean, I'm a big PoS fan and I can't wait for their new album, but at least from listening to that one track, it's not anything too far off from what PoS has done in the past. I think it'll be a great CD, but probably more along the lines of traditional PoS. The new DT, on the other hand, is going to blow minds, being all experimental and different and kickass and stuff. Either way, 2002 is shaping up to be a great year already. - Chris ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Dec 2001 21:59:27 -0500 From: Carlos Alfaro To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: NEW PAIN OF SALVATION ON THE WEB!!!!!!!!
