Message-ID: I got the new Yes CD "Magnification" a couple days ago. I have to say that the guys in Yes still have it. This CD has a fresh sound while still being a Yes disc. There are no keyboards on this CD other than some piano played by Alan White. Instead they use an orchestra. When I heard that this CD would feature an orchestra I had my doubts. Most of the previous efforts of "Band plays with London Philharmonic" where they rehash old tunes using a symphony have been pretty lame (including Yes'). Usually those attempts would try to use the orchestra to replace a single player (such as the keyboard player), playing simple melodic lines and minor background filler. This CD avoids the problems found on those other discs by using the orchestra as an actual orchestra. The symphonic instruments are (often) used as part of the melodies in addition to providing great harmonies and extra layers. It's a very cool sound. The classical instruments meld surprisingly well with the bass of Chris Squire and guitar of Steve Howe. Jon Anderson is also up to form. Some of the more laid back songs have not caught my interest much yet. But, a couple songs such as "Spirit of Survival" and "Dreamtime" are fantastic, with powerful instrumental sections, great melodies and harmonies. I'm not sure how they'll do that live. This is the first CD in a while that has exceeded my expectations. If you like Yes, give it a shot. Correct? So what is the harm in letting a couple of MP3s loose on the net? We are all gonna buy the album anyway. Some MP3s might draw in some new fans. After all that is how I have discovered many bands. Bands who wouldn't have gotten my money otherwise. Most recently - Ambeon. There were a couple of MP3s on the Ayreon website and I tried them out and loved it, went and got the album. Any recommendations for something new to listen to? I have and enjoy Ayreon, POS, SX, and such. What else should I check out? I downloaded some My Dying Bride to sample the other day to check out. Haven't had a chance to listen yet. Anyone else? Some of them I don't pursue, but I've discovered Ozric Tentacles, Conception: Flow, and Symphony X: V through MP3 samples. However, those were released albums. I'm not sure how I feel about pre-release MP3s, since Mike Portnoy likes to have an air of mystery and surprise around each album's release. By downloading MP3s, you're looking through the gift wrap and shaking the boxes. I think there is some sort of "surprise factor" that the band (or MP?) wants to go along with this album. Of course, I could be totally wrong.. Well, I don't visit mp.com..in fact, I don't think I've ever been there. I found out about the show through the UACM mailing list, and while it didn't have specific info on when tickets would be available, it did give me a heads up about the show and reminder to keep an eye out for tickets. It would have been better to get the onsale info from somewhere, as I had to stumble upon that myself the day they went onsale. I saw somebody on a message board mention they got their tickets, and I managed to get mine after reading that. Perhaps (I don't know either way) the show isn't sold out...that there might be a certain amount of tickets that were held back and might still be available at a later date. Does anyone have any information on this? - Chris ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Dec 2001 15:38:04 -0400 From: "Carlos A. I didn't realise they had that song lying around in a good non-demoish stat, well either that or they recorded it, just for this event.
