We cannot expect people from other countries to all just on this global bandwagon. Ultimately, this is our problem...Bin Laden or whoever is our problem. Some countries might be willing to help, some might even be willing to sing the National Anthem. We should not be so egotistical to think that everyone will. It's that typical American behaviour that got us in this position. End of sermon. You're missing the point. The song was played in tribute to a horrible act, and was a show of support to a country. I'm sure that if none of this had happened, the US anthem would not have been played. >Derek and Yngwie got really mad. I don't blame them. They should have been happy that they finished the rest of the set. I personally would have walked off the stage, especially after crude chants of BinLaden or whatever. As Derek said, it's not a political thing, it's a matter of showing respect to thousands of innocent people that were killed in a terrible and senseless act. By booing and chanting BinLaden, they were showng absolute disregard and disrespect to those people that were hurt or killed and their families. > Not the kind of words that a fan would like to hear....peasant infested > THIRD WORLD CITY ? Fans....that boo the performers and throw shit at the stage. Nice fans. Granted, that remark is probably out of blind anger and somewhat inappropriate.....but I understand his anger, not his public reaction. > emails about the incident. Then a few minutes ago Derek posted a note on his > site apologizing for his previous "hate" email. While I agree he shouldn't have gone into calling it a third-world city, he has the right to say whatever he wants, especially when something like this occurs. I have a problem with his politically-correct apology on something like this, but he does what he needs to do. > Yngwie can play whaterever he wants, but he should be concerned that not > everybody might like. It's not a patriotic act and it's not an American force-feeding patriotism on others. That's ridiculous. I'm sure he's done it in other places, and got a better response. I applaud Yngwie for playing it as his encore - at that point, the crowd should have been happy enough that they went through the entire set. > Just to finish, we Brazilians have nothing against USA, and we're backing up > USA against all terrorist acts held against America. I don't think anyone (including Derek) thinks that Brazil is Anti-American or anything like that. I think the realization needs to be made that although these people are performers, they're human beings as well, and a selfish, despicable crowd doesn't deserve their respect simply because they paid to see a show. Like I said before, the fact that they're performers is proven when they actually finished their sets in front of the crowd..... Derek's "peasant-infested" comment was out of line and his saying that the country and city shouldn't be judged by the crowd's action is absolutely correct. But he shouldn't apologize for anything but that comment. And that crowd should definitely be ashamed of themselves. -Al -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- w e w a l k i n t h e d a m a g e o f m a n k i n d -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- email_address_removed OR email_address_removed ---- End Original Message ---- Dream Theater : The Official Site - http://www.dreamtheater.net/ ____________________________________________________________ Get your own FREE Web and POP E-mail Service in 14 languages at http://www.zzn.com. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Oct 2001 09:58:29 -0400 From: Cyberwolf To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Musicians: Artists first, self-promotion often included. Message-ID: Hey y'all. Someone recently posted about not being a fan of musicians (artists?) using their musical status to promote their religious/political beliefs. Well, I thought about that one for a while, in various different context, to examine my own opinion. I for one, being an artist (that is, musician) AND a social/political activist, have to acknowledge there is a fine line between USING one's position to draw attention to their political affiliation/religious status, and using their ART to present their beliefs. Neither one seems to be all inclusive, nor non-indulgent. But that is the point. As an artist, be you a musician, painter, dancer, poet, etc, etc, etc... ad infinitum, art is the creative expression of personal ideals, opinions, and beliefs, whether it be political, religious, social, theoretical, hypothetical, scientific, or mundane daily existence. One should not have to hold themselves to a general standard that critics and some journalists, and fans, attempt to hold them too. Just the self-expression contained within one's 'art' is enough, sometimes, to inspire a wide range of emotions. Yes, some artists, as a general observation, are in a position where they can express personal insights and espouse their philosophies to the masses. I have no problem with this. Plenty of people have learned about "AN" social advocacy cause from, perhaps, U2 or Rage, learned about "AN" inner city perspectives from KRS-One and Public Enemy, about "A" christian identity from Michael W SMith or Amy Grant, and so on and so forth. It's self-expression. Singing about sex and partying is as relevent to some as singing about third world debt relief is to others as singing about the fact that 'most people are dicks' is to even others (Ludichrist, merging into Scatterbrain, btw) And that is what an artist is: a self-serving tool of self-expression. Matters concerning political or monetary gain, or otherwise, is somewhat irrelevant. If one doesn't like a musicians (for example) lyrical concepts and insights, well, hey, DON"T buy the CD, DON'T attend the concert, DON'T purchase the t-shirt. Remember, no one is forcing anyone here to do anything EXCEPT express their personal beliefs like artists usually attempt to do. Now this is my personal perspective, and being one who applies healthy (and irreverent) doses of personal political, theological and social elements into his music, lyrics, artwork AND philosophies, I find this subject particularly significant. Imagine if all we had to listen to, by mandate, or decree, was bland lyrics incorporating "Love" into every other lines, and each stanza consisting of atleast 5 'You's' and 12 "Baby's". Now, that is cool for SOME. But personally, I wouldn't want to hear/see everyone approaching their art the same way. Much as I like 'em, I don't wish everyone to sound like Rage Against the Machine, Dream Theater, Sade, Prince, EW&F, etc. (Wait, there ARE alot of DT clones... ok, bad tangent) Individuality is what inspires and refines art. Whether we like it or not. Apply the 'television-station' technique (which is, if you don't like what they are saying, turn the channel) whenever possible. Now this is just my personal perspective, democratically speaking, and that's all it is. I do not advocate any form of censorship in any shape, way or form. If I don't like something, I have the right to change the channel or even turn it off. I also have the right to complain about it, and even to protest. Sure! Definitely, our country was founded on voices of protest. But to those (and I am not indicating that anyone here has mentioned this) who seek to censor our art, whatever shape it arrives in, serves contrary to some of the basic values that this country, and a free democratic society, in essence, exist for. Anyhow, enough proselytizing and pandering now, I am off the soapbox (though I am short enough to need one). Tolerance and diversity are personal keys to existence for me. G;day, peeps, and perhaps we'll get that new DT CD set in time for a late XMas present? Scott Mosher; Musician/designer/goofball/Allroundniceguy..
