By no means would I want Petrucci to become another Vai - one's enough! :-p However, my point is about Petrucci being comfortable on stage and knowing what to do whle on stage. During Dream Theater shows it's not as evident as the focus wasn't completely on him (as it was the G3 shows) but I still get the impression that John doesn't always look 100% comfortable with hundreds or thousands of eyes on him. Anyway, at the G3 shows, Petrucci looked *very* stiff (although I went to 3 shows early in the tour, and I'm sure to some degree he loosened up later) and my comment was made more about being confident in his playing and running the show (at least during G3), instead of trying to figure out what he's gonna do. Just a note. I fell in love with Vai's playing in the late 80's. At that point I had not even seen a picture. Just heard Flex-able on a taped record. I first saw a video in the mid 90's by which time Passion and Warfare had been out a while and was and still is one of my 10 favorite records of all time. The first time I saw him play was with a 40 piece orchestra and he was wearing a shirt, pants and did not do ONE rock star antic and still had more control of feedback than anyone else (with the possible exception of Hendrix). Oh he's good and he started playing for Zappa in the late 70's, early 80's (not sure which), so he's been around. ... and for the love of God, please don't mention Michael Angelo in the same breath as Vai. As a guitar player, even JP has a lot to do to reach that status. I agree he goes over the top on stage. I say let him. He plays so well and writes such good songs, I just close my eyes and listen. I didn't really even think about it as making fun of stuff. I did say it was the first time I had seen him, and knew virtually nothing about him, so it was all just a mistake. Thanks for the clarification. >hehe Michael Angelo... that guy cracks me up. Yea the double neck thing was hilarious in that Metal Methods video. The problem with Michael is that he couldn't write a song to save his life. Guess Vai beats him there, by just a smudge...:) GrEG ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 19 Aug 2001 13:12:51 -0400 From: "Joe Latuscha" To: Subject: Re: Petrucci on stage Message-ID: <001001c128d2$2d7b67f0$1f546f82@majesty> Greg Get over it, Vai is an amazig guitarist. If you want proof go find a copy of Vai's Album 'Seventh Songs.' This is a collection of a bunch of songs that have appeared on Vai's albums over the course of 15 year or so. They are all very incredible, heart felt songs. Vai has this thing about making the 7th song on his albums the song that he has put the most work in, the one that will stand out most musically. Songs like "Amazing Grace," "For The Love of God," "Hand on Heart." All great Steve Vai songs. As far as Vai's showmanship... He is a hyper kinda guy, like Michael said, he played for DLR, and Whitesnake. When I saw him playing with Whitesnake, I saw Vai throw his guitar up on top of the PA speaker, hang kinda half onto it (the PA Speaker), and played the rest of the song with his feet and half his body dangling in the air. He is just having fun. But I guess that is only my $$.02 worth.... Vai's "showmanship" is the biggest load of horseshit I've ever seen. I was so disgusted with him on the G3 tour. I hadn't ever listened to him before, except for a few clips from Alive in an Ultraworld, and I thought they were cool, so I was really excited to see him play, especially since a lot of people seemed to be really pumped up for him. > As soon as he came out I knew it was gonna be downhill... He looked like an ex-Aerosmith person in his gettup. The biggest thing that pissed me off about him is that it seemed like he wasn't focusing on playing music, but impressing the audience and showing off. His body language is so weird, and he'd always just try to look like a badass, even if he was doing something crappy. And the fan in the front so it blows back his hair...give me a break. And in the first song, he switched his left hand over the bottom and top?! That's stupid, and just proves he's trying to show off, and it's not even original. If anyone has seen the guy from Nitro on the "Metal Methods" instructional video, you'd see that guy does the same thing, and I'm almost certain he was around before Vai... > > Well, sorry for this ranting, but I was just astonished once I saw Vai after all of the buildup and expectations I had amassed, and I can't believe someone thinks Petrucci should "learn from Vai" in the showmanship methods. You'd better not miss that one.Roine Stolt, their guitar player and singer is in Transtlantic with Mike Portnoy. That's probably where you've heard of him.Pro- gressive rock, lots of tasteful melodies, catchy tunes, probably the best prog rock band out there along with Spock's Beard.I'd say don't miss them. And as much as i enjoy both bands i really can't see how they could grow in the same direction. <<< Well, obviously DT was influential to SX's founding. But more recently, SFaM had a lot of stuff that just let go a little more, and the sound just happened ... like track 5. "He said you'll know the truth as your future days unfold", the way the melody goes, and the guitars backing it up ... it was like they just decided to DO it rather then trying to do something in particular with it. It sounded a lot more like the stuff SX was doing. Then Symphony X "V" just, to me at least, cultivated everything the progmetal movement had been going for all this time. It had very similar sonics in the sense of balance and direction that SFaM did, and I think it would be clear to most here that they took a step further, in the same direction as DT did. So it seems to *me* that if they continue to move in a similar direction, they would produce music at a whole new level of kickassedness altogether. >>> > > But then, i don't like the way these people sing at > all. About making the generalization: ....i was aware of that, that's why i said "most"...and "most" is not "all" ! There's always exceptions for every generalization made. Anyway, i hope i didn't offend anyone. I was just pointing out my likes and dislikes of the DVD, and that was a worthy-mentioning personal dislike. <<< Well, don't kill yourself trying to be too PC. I don't like the way the majority of them sound either. Yes, there are exceptions, but in general it's just annoying to me. That "Survivor" song from Destiny's Child is among the most annoying piles of crap I've ever heard. Anyway, white people do that same kind of crap, but if we think real, it's like this. I know several black people who kick ass. But I do not like the R&B / HipHop stuff one bit. A majority of their 'musicians" and "singers" are black. That's not our fault; so I hope you don't apologize too much for it. :) >>> >Rudess IS a real band member(wee..) and DT PLAYS MUSIC, they dont DANCE... I get the idea they are starting to run out of steam in the studio. But their SHOWS have always been known for being awesome. They just released Dream Mixes 3, which remixes some of their older, more classic stuff. They will very likely play a lot of stuff from the past AND present, so it should be great. I don't count on ever having a chance to see them again, from what I hear about the band (Like they might disband).
