Hopefully the G3 tour helped - I'm >guessing Vai >especially showed him a thing or two about >showmanship, tho I hope Petrucci >would never get as cheesy as Vai can.... Are you kidding? Vai's "showmanship" is the biggest load of horseshit I've ever seen. I was so disgusted with him on the G3 tour. I hadn't ever listened to him before, except for a few clips from Alive in an Ultraworld, and I thought they were cool, so I was really excited to see him play, especially since a lot of people seemed to be really pumped up for him. As soon as he came out I knew it was gonna be downhill... He looked like an ex-Aerosmith person in his gettup. The biggest thing that pissed me off about him is that it seemed like he wasn't focusing on playing music, but impressing the audience and showing off. His body language is so weird, and he'd always just try to look like a badass, even if he was doing something crappy. And the fan in the front so it blows back his hair...give me a break. And in the first song, he switched his left hand over the bottom and top?! That's stupid, and just proves he's trying to show off, and it's not even original. If anyone has seen the guy from Nitro on the "Metal Methods" instructional video, you'd see that guy does the same thing, and I'm almost certain he was around before Vai... Well, sorry for this ranting, but I was just astonished once I saw Vai after all of the buildup and expectations I had amassed, and I can't believe someone thinks Petrucci should "learn from Vai" in the showmanship methods. At least JP isn't bullshitting and just does his thing. Greg ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2001 14:57:45 +0000 From: "Jxrgen C. I mean, he was in David Lee Roth's band, talk about over the top stage persona.... And why can't a talented musician have fun too? Vai's playing is incredible, he definitely plays guitar like no one else... I think that seeing Vai play must be a little something like seeing Jimi Hendrix play back in the day (especially if you went to a Vai show without knowing much of his material -- it would seem extremely bizarre I would imagine). But back to the fun part... Just because you are playing some terrifying guitar, doesn't mean you have to come out in a tux and sit on a little stool in front of a bunch of stuffy music critics. The G3 audience is not just a bunch of GIT fretboard fanatics (well, maybe 90% of them at LA show were), but there are also people there who just enjoy a good rock concert. So I think Vai is really trying to "entertain" both musicians and non-musicians alike. I nearly split a gut laughing at the stage entrance outfit and the big pimp hat later on in the show. ;-) >The biggest thing that pissed me off about him is that it seemed like he >wasn't focusing on playing music, but impressing the audience and showing >off. I don't think the fan is there "totally" to blow his hair back... I remember seeing him when he had really short hair and he still had that big fan front and center. Maybe he wants to stay cool under the lights (it probably also helps keep his hands dry)... or maybe he used to practice guitar in the bed of a fast moving pickup truck and tries to simulate that feeling on stage. ;-) >And in the first song, he switched his left hand over the bottom and >top?! That's stupid, and just proves he's trying to show off, and it's >not even original. Well, if you had seen the DLR videos from that era, or seen them in concert... that sort of stuff is all over the place. Again, not really showing off...poking a little fun though for sure... I especially thought it was funny when he tried to fling the guitar around his back (like Yngwie and a couple others used to do back in the showy 80s), but failed. Having seen 3 G3 shows, and watching him fail at it 3 times, I am pretty sure he did that faux move on purpose... ;-) >If anyone has seen the guy from Nitro on the "Metal Methods" instructional >video, you'd see that guy does the same thing, and I'm almost certain he >was around before Vai... hehe Michael Angelo... that guy cracks me up. I remember way back in Hollywood, when Nitro first formed, him and the singer (Jim Gillette?) were walking into all the clubs handing out flyers (I think I was in the The Whiskey at the time), with announcements like "watch Michael play a gutiar with 2 necks at the same time!", "see the singer shatter a glass with only his voice!", etc... ~Michael Kizer < email_address_removed > < ICQ # 2070538 > "Enter ivory gates through midnight skies..." ~ http://www.ivorygate.com >>> Fates Warning ~ Island In The Stream <<< >>> Dream Theater and Kevin Moore "Unofficial" Song Books <<< >>> Underground Internet Radio at: http://www.ytseradio.com <<< ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 5936 ************************** === Contributions to ytsejam: ytsejam@torchsong.com === === Send requests to: ytsejam-request@torchsong.com === === Brought by the ghost of ytsejam@arastar.coms past === === Reach the owner of this list at: ytsejam-owner@torchsong.com ===
