Just think how many chicks you can get when you show off >your mighty autograph collection! Graham, you are cordially invited to fuck off. I expect nothing from band members. If they want to slip out the back door without so much as a "thanks for coming" to the fans, that's their right. But I am eternally impressed by people like Portnoy, Mike Keneally, and Steve Morse, who will cheerfully chat with fans until practically dragged onto the departing bus. It's not the autographs I want. It's the chance to talk to the musicians and tell them how much I've enjoyed their music over the years. I've been a Satriani fan for fifteen years and have been to over twenty of his shows, but circumstances have always prevented me from attending meet n' greets or talking to the man afterwards. The venue this time was one that lends itself extremely well for brief meetings with the fans afterwards and I've gotten to meet several of my favorites that way. Thirty seconds is all it would have taken for me to say hi and tell him how much happiness his music has given me. Instead he just vanished. I was disappointed, not angry. I don't look on signatures as a badge of honor or something to be sold on Ebay, but rather pleasant memories from when I got to shake the hand of some of my favorite musicians and tell them thanks. Their answering smile is reward enough -- the autograph itself is just the tangible proof. cheers, Phil =================================== Phil Carter -- artoo (at) bellsouth (dot) net http://personal.atl.bellsouth.net/~artoo "Music is moonlight in the gloomy night of life." -- Jean Paul Richter ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 21:55:17 EDT From: email_address_removed To: Subject: Re: Tori Amos - Fiona Apple (non DT) Message-ID: > For all of you Tori Amos fans out there... I just got her first album, Tidal, yesterday and have only listened to it once so far but it's the same type of thing. Good stuff. Also, check out her cover of "Across The Universe" from the Pleasantville soundtrack. I love that song (her version at least, the original Beatles version sounds horrible to me ). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 22:22:33 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Tori Amos - Fiona Apple (non DT) Message-ID: --part1_64.10d5bd19.288a4169_boundary Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" In a message dated 7/20/2001 2:19:25 PM Eastern Daylight Time, email_address_removed writes: >< For all of you Tori Amos fans out there... Have you ever listened to Fiona Apple? I've been listening to her discs, and I was surprised. All I had heard before were her MTV hits, and I assumed her to be another Tori wannabe. Turns out she's pretty good (if you like the piano/strings/pop/jazz style). She writes all her own material, and seems to enjoy staying in minor keys. Anyone else ever give her a try? >< Yeah, Fiona's great. She's no Tori Amos, but she's still very good. All I ever knew of her's was "Criminal" which was so-so, but then I rented the Pleasantville DVD and saw her cover of "Across the Universe" and absolutely loved it. It's also one of the best videos I've ever seen, but I'm a big PTA mark. Sleep To Dream, The First Taste and Shadowboxer are all great songs from her first album, although I can't really respect any lyrics that use the word "baby" so unashamedly. --part1_64.10d5bd19.288a4169_boundary ---YTSEJAM FILTER: Rest of message skipped because of attachment ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 23:03:49 -0400 From: "Joe DeAngelo" To: Subject: RE: G3 Recruiting Mission Message-ID: <001301c11191$c3d48720$message_id_removed> Phil Carter said: > Just don't expect much in the way of autographs afterwards. Just think how many chicks you can get when you show off >your mighty autograph collection! Graham, first of all Phil said nothing of the kind, why are you putting words in his mouth? Secondly - Most of us here know that Phil is somebody who truly appreciates music as much as ANYBODY else. The fact that he was hoping to get some autographs (of musicians he admires) as a little bonus... what's so wrong with that? - Joe D. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jul 2001 08:34:00 +0200 From: "Mark Bredius" To: Subject: RE:Tori Amos - Fiona Apple (non DT) Message-ID: <000201c111af$20c64be0$0100007f@localhost> Brian Hansen wrote: > For all of you Tori Amos fans out there... I love Fiona Apple... I thought her debut album "Tidal" was great, but "When The Pawn..." is even better... She has a very deep, warm and jazzy voice that I can never get enough of... She's definitely no Tori Amos wannabe (who, BTW, I love as well). I and some friends of mine were at the backstage area since around 10:30 or 11:00 and managed to scare Virgil into signing autographs for us! WE also saw MP right when he woke up moving his camera equipment inside. All the guys from Vai's band were there including Vai himself being the cool dude he is. He signed my friends guitar and posed for some pix that were really cool. Mike Keneally was the coolest, almost seeming like he wanted to be there and talk most of the time. It was a great experience even though my friends and I were burned from the sun! I've never seen Vai in concert before, and let me tell you, the price of admission would have been worth it if it was just Vai playing for the hour he did without JP or Satch. He has total control over the instrument like I've never seen before. I wasn't too into Satches set, so we went upstairs and started drinking beer. The jam session was cool too. I'm sure there are setlists out there for the ppl who haven't gone. ==== Rob Denni 3008 Tallwood Way Augusta, GA 30906 (706) 790-8937 Go visit my website! http://home.talkcity.com/HeadbangersHwy/funkygroove/index.html __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I am a fan but it is because Fiona is my 2nd cousin. I have only met her once in my life, and we were both very young at the time. I really like her first album "Tidal" because it is more catchy. "When the Pawn" is a little too, well, "concept album"-ey for me. It's neat to have famous family, even though I bet that she wouldn't even know who I was if I did meet her again, but it is neat nonetheless. Jeremy P. Normally I lurk in the shadows, posting some insane ramblings or sociopathic comments from time to time, but now I must divulge that my new CD is officially out. The music is somewhat dark, atmospheric and combines progressive rock, new age and trance-inspired melodies. Please feel free to Check it out, just don't wreck yourself in the process. I don't want to be held responsible for fractured limbs, dilapidated bodies, or misplaced organs (or pianos). Seriously, I would appreciate any and all feedback. If anyone is interested in obtaining a copy, please email me. PS: I was at the Petrucci/Portnoy meet & greet in Raliegh, NC and the turnout was more than expected, so I am sure the guys were happy about that. Didn't make it to the show though, as I had a previous engagement, but with all these "G Theater" rumors flittin' about, I wish I made it. http://www.theambientmind.com/virtuality/sounds/ Thanks...
