Message-ID: So I just got back from the Boston G3 gig, which I went to with Bogie and Skadz, whom I met for the first time today. Nice guy. ;) Anyway, not only did we manage to sneak Bogie's DAT in, but I also got my digital camera through the gates as well, and managed to take an astound- ing *72* pictures of the four sets. They will ALL go online within the next few days, but I have to wait until I get home from Boston because I don't have any of the connection cables to download the photos to PC. Bogie and I have been listening to the Petrucci set on his computer, and we've started remastering it so we can upload it to Lines in the Sand. And we will most definitely be uploading the MP3 version at the very least TONIGHT. The CD Audio version may have to wait a little bit longer simply because it takes longer to upload. In addition, it looks like the machine which hosts our media files for LITS is down at the moment; the problem is being addressed even as I type this. So check LITS tonight / Wednesday morning-afternoon and you should find a fresh new boot! Oh yeah, and we just uploaded a CD-Audio version and an MP3 version of Nighttown Nostalgia to LITS, so keep on the lookout for that as well. (For those of you who don't know what NN is, it was 6/22/98, the Rotterdam Fan Club gig.) ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.dhs.org/ ------------------------------------------------- "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt." - Abraham Lincoln ------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 08:38:34 -0500 From: "Souter, Jan-Michael" To: "'ytsejam@torchsong.com'" Subject: RE: holy... Last year's DVD was S/J/V, I was just saying that if I can't see this year's G3 I could get that DVD and SFNY and have videos of Satch, Vai, and Petrucci, although not together. I only wish that SymX had a DVD out... Sorry about getting your hopes up, I should have been a little more careful in my wording. But, your idea was a great one: maybe we could start a petition for Petrucci, Romeo, and somebody else (Steve Howe? Steve Morse?) to do their own G3 tour and make a DVD. THAT would be sweet. Hehe... My Response: I totally disagree with this comment. In fact, I couldn't disagree more. In a era of music whose blueprint for success in song writing is "verse-sing, chorus-scream, verse-sing, repeat", it is a pleasant surprise to hear some music from time to time that involves talent and musicianship. I have seen Dream Theater some 17 times in concert, I realize that barely touches the amount of times that some people have seen DT live. Although I am humbled by the number of shows people like Skadz have been to, I can make a judgement for myself on K. James LaBrie. I can tell you that for every off night that JL has, he has 20 good ones. He is a perfect match for DT, and for the quality of music they are creating and performing. It is essential that the singer for DT have the ability and vocal range that spans a wide range. DT has so much ability that it would be a shame to see someone sing for the band who couldn't hit the high notes or had a monotone voice as many vocalists in bands do today. JL represents an educated singer, someone who takes vocals very seriously, not some "joe" off the street who can sing monotone or scream hard and loud. I will admit (and don't take this as a personal shot at you Tim) that when I first started listening to DT, JL bothered the shit out of me. Why? Because I was so used to the commercial, mass-produced, over-digitized garbage that was being created in the early 90's that was postceded by a wonderful (insert sarcasm) creation called "Grunge" but I won't even get into that. Anyways, DT was a salvation for me, and JL grew on me so quickly that I never looked back. My suggestion to you is this: go out to your local used CD store (that is where you'll find all the grunge) and purchase as much nasty garbage as you can (i.e. Nirvana, uck) and then lock yourself in a room for a day listening to all of that garbage. Then, at the end of the day, put on some DT. You'll find you'll accept JL like a steak to a starving tiger. I sympathize with you Tim because I did the same thing. I don't know how long you've been listening to DT though so I am not sure what "stage" of listening you are in when it pertains to them. I know that at first I thought JL didn't fit DT, but the more I listen to DT, the more I feel that he is the PERFECT match for them-especially after listening to WDADU, damn, C Dominici sucked! Now about the review-The reviewer obviously wasn't a big fan of prog in general which is why I think he judged DT so harshly in the review. I won't blame P.O.S. for the review-they didn't utter a Blind Melon-esque comment. I will give them a listen if I find something of theirs around. Have seen them 3 times live. I have heard countless live recordings/bootlegs. In my opinion they are the best band ever. I have never seen a group live that can put on a show like they do. Everything they do is about the music. They don't need giant props or 8,000 lights. That is what I love about them. >He is a perfect match for DT, and for the quality of music they are creating and performing.....JL represents an educated singer, someone who takes vocals very seriously, not some "joe" off the street who can sing monotone or scream hard and loud. I agree he is an excellent singer. He actually knows what he is doing. I have a great amount of respect for him. Today most "singers" for bands have no idea what they are doing with their voice, they just decide they can sing one day and start singin'. My main annoyance with JL is what he does when he sings live. Sometimes he lets himself get too loud. Sounds like a knife comming out of my speakers. I say this in contrast to his studio recordings where they seem to mix him into the total sound more. >My suggestion to you is this: go out to your local used CD store (that is where you'll find all the grunge) and purchase as much nasty garbage as you can (i.e. Nirvana, uck) and then lock yourself in a room for a day listening to all of that garbage. That is the worst suggestion I have ever heard. I can't imagine spending money on grunge music, even used music. Funny how they sell grunge as "used" now. I didn't know music was disposable. I guess stuff like grunge is. :-) In my short blurb I never meant to come off as meaning DT should find a new singer. That would be the dumbest thing they could ever do. I just think sometimes he should relax, esp. live. But believe me, he's never going to stop me from supporting DT. They are the best at what they do. Also...about the POS review, I don't agree they sound much like DT at all. There are some similarities, but saying that POS has more soul and emotion...that kind of discredits the whole review I think. -Tim ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Jul 2001 19:04:32 -0300 From: "Tony/Alexis/Axel" To: "ytsejam" Subject: new Kamelot, more (some DT content) Message-ID: <005201c10f0c$77ba3240$message_id_removed> Hey, any reviews of the new Kamelot album? And also, any reviews of an album that's on the Laser's Edge label, which has Michael Manring on bass and Jordan Rudess as a guest performer? I forgot the name of the album (I think it might be Addition by Substraction or something like that), and the band's name is the last names of the bassist, drummer and guitarist. Thanks!
