Derek Sherinian was of course magical on the keys, but Virgil Donati was just blowing everyone away on the drums... I've never seen a better drummer in my life... (would love to see MP live, but here in Australia, that doesn't look like happening anytime soon). And you have to checkout Donati's tiger striped sideburns/beard... pretty freaky. The band was quite alot heavier that I expected (which was a good thing) with abit of the Awake sort of sound in parts. Highlights of the night were of course all the solos, drums in particular, and the guitar/keyboard dual between Tony MacAlpine and Derek... these guys are tight. With people going on about Derek's ego and stuff, I can safely say there was no sign of that, and the band interacted well together and seemed to really be enjoying playing. Derek was even chatting with fans before the show, and the band met the fans afterwards. Look at some of our local bands, like Back Porch Mary, for example. BPM has only released one album, but it was mass-produced and everything. They made it on their own, as far as I know, and the music is (obviously) not commercial or sales-oriented. It's BPM-oriented. The music is made to sound like the band wants it to sound, not like what some guy in a suit says it needs to sound like. Someone else mentioned something similar to this, if DT got their own studio and made their own albums. My point was that they could do it, if they had the money. If we screw them out of, oh, say two million sales (I'm sure there are at least that many people who download albums instead of buying them), or half of all the albums OFB had sold prior to the release of SFAM, they will not be able to afford to do this. The other guy that mentioned this had the same idea that I did, he just was a little more clear about what he meant. When it comes to the technical/technology side of music, yes, I am stupid. But Steve Unruh, Back Porch Mary, Sharkey's Little Groove Box, The Moody Hooters, Bitter Sane, and several other local bands have tried this method and it works. DT could do it on a much larger scale, since they have a much larger audience. They could get a "real" studio, and make millions of CDs instead of thousands (yes, some of these local bands have made over a thousand records). I know it can't be all that hard, because Steve Unruh is a good friend of mine who makes his CDs (his third, a two-disk Progressive-Rock/Folk album, just came out) in his free time between 19 hours of college classes a week. His ability to have complete control over the music shows in every song he writes. Anyway, I hope I didn't lose everyone here.
