A subscription to Maxim is only twelve dollars. Most U.S. magazine subscriptions are around that cost, between fifteen and thirty dollars. Some of the more frequent magazines (i.e. those that are weekly) such as Sports Illustrated, or newspapers such as the New York Times Sunday Edition, are closer to the fifty to sixty dollar a year range, but that's just because it's more frequent. Get your tickets now, I bought 3 tickets and they are in row letter "O" already!!!! This show was also advertised on 98Rock in Baltimore this morning so it is gauranteed to sell out. I'm REAL pissed about this right now as I had made preparations to be first in line tomorrow morning at my favorite ticket outlet to assure I would get something very good(in the first 5 rows). I wonder if they held some tickets back for tomorrow? Arrrggghhhh!!!!!! Oh, well at least I'm there. Go grab your tickets while you still. What it really takes to make something professional and of a higher quality is to get more people working on it, so that simple things like spelling errors, punctuation mistakes, grammar and the like are not missed. A magazine's first priority is to its writing, and I offered to help with that. (In addition, they still use the traditional straight typewriter quotation marks, which drive me nuts ;).) As for the frequency and up-to-dateness of the information, one thing that you must realize (in fact, I just realized it again when I really started to think about it) is that these people do this stuff in their spare time. As such, there is NO way you can expect it to remain in their first priority to do, considering the fact that I'm sure they all have other jobs to do in order to keep a living. So I think that we need to remember that, because as a spare-time thing, it is a remarkable job that they do. ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.dhs.org/ ------------------------------------------------- I like to go down to the dog pound and pretend that I've found my dog. I enjoy TPE, it draws me in but I do have to agree with Graham Borland, all the songs sound very similar and run together. It is like a 1 track, 70 minute CD. But I DO enjoy it. I have been watching all the opinions b/c I want to get one of the other two, but can't decide which to get. So, I have been hooked on a CD that I haven't seen anyone mention at all, Ayreon "Universal Migrator 1: The Dream Sequencer." I absolutely love it. Different style of music from song to song, male and female vocals, and overall a killer sci-fi concept album. KILLER. I can't seem to get into "UM 2 - Flight of the Universal Migrator," though. It is heavier but there isn't something that pulls all the songs together like the vocals on part one. You have great guest vocals from Helloween, Primal Fear, Symphony X, Stratovarious, Iron Maiden and more, but for it being a concept it pulls away from the story. What is everyone else's thoughts. In fact they pay for the majority of the cost of most publications (and hence undermine any objectivity they claim). Any magazine worth its paper is subscription driven, meaning they rely on fees and small classified ads for their money. Now if we wanted Vodka ads every other page in the fanzine we wouldnt have to pay so much for it. Of course ad buyers always insist on some form of content control, even if it means a review of content before it hits the stands. It's a concept album (like all PoS albums so far) and the music was written around the lyrics. So you will NOT get all of it if you don't know what he's singing about. > Many of you guys hailed PoS like they were the > goddamn second coming of DT.=20 They have very little to do with DT and that's what makes them interesting. If you're looking for a DT clone, get the=20 Dali's Dilemma disc and quit bashing bands for being original. > Shame on you - not even close! =20 I'd say their singer is leaps ahead of LaBrie (who has yet to prove that he can really sing stuff "with an edge" - he sounds just shitty on the heavier DT stuff like Lie. Try "Used" from PoS's latest album to see how it's done ...) Also the songs and lyrics actually go together very well, quite unlike large chunks of DT's latest offering for example. > and the singer's voice, which=20 > was raved > about by pretty much everybody, is nothing special.=20 Sure, aside from the multi-octave range which goes really deep (not just high as with most guys claiming that range) when the music calles for it. And the fact that he uses it with way more variety than about 98% of all other singers. The best example (I know you don't have the CD, but try Napster or whatever source): Reconciliation from their latest album. There's a part where he goes from deep, almost grunting style vox to clean high ones within seconds (2:54 - 3:40). Or just compare 1:20-30 with 3:14.=20 And yes, it's one and the same singer. ;) > These guys sound like > they are playing progressive and heavy JUST TO PLAY=20 > PROGRESSIVE AND HEAVY. Actually, quite the opposite is true about PoS. They hardly play anything that's "prog in your face", they tend to hide the progressive stuff pretty well under the "standard metal" top. There's a lot of stuff that'll have you go "oops, I didn't notice this was in 5/8" or whatever before you actually count it out. But who am I telling, you've heard like half an hour of their music and nothing from that half an hour is really all that progressive at all, so I guess this is going to lead nowhere. > I don't doubt the talent=20 > of these guys, > but the singer and engineer need to get their shit together=20 > before I will > listen again.=20 Before you bash Daniel's singing, how about showing us any proof that he doesn't have "his shit together"? > How is the production on their latest album? Newstand is for suckers. :) As for the "bonus" CD, I totally understand the mentality that it should be part of that price. It doesn't matter what the fan club says they're charging. People decide what they're paying for. If I'm only paying the $25 to get the CD, then I'm paying for the CD. Of course they can do what they want, it's their fan club.
