I like it because even though they are playing heavy and progressive, it doesn't sound too progressive on the first listen, but it opens much deeper the more you do listen to it. Listen to the first few minutes of "Home" (the PoS song on One Hour...) -- You've got bass & drums repeating a riff in 5, while the piano plays a melody in 7 over it and drives the chord changes. That simple pulse in 5 is the same as the opening guitar riff in "Water" (the previous song) and also appears in a few other places. That kind of thing happens all over the place on this album., and that's why I thing PoS is a great band. Oh, and just so your flamesuit doesn't feel wasted, you're a complete fucking moron. You dare do disagree with me, therefore you have the brains of an ass (not the animal, the body part) :) (yes, this was a JOKE) The production is better on "The Perfect Element" but if you don't like Daniel's voice, you're kind of out of luck. He sings, plays guitar and (pretty much) writes all of the music and lyrics, so he's the main force of the band. ~Chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2001 00:27:30 +0200 From: CyberDuke To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: fan club rants Message-ID: > From: "Rob Pociluk" > Subject: Re: fan club rants > > I apologize for: 1. being stupid enough to continue this thread > and 2. for not knowing enough to turn off the fucking HTML. > DOH! > > ---- Begin Original Message ---- > Sent: Tue, 5 Jun 2001 20:09:17 -0700 (PDT) > Subject: Re: Re: fan club rants > > ..... I've always kind of agreed about OHbtCL, but was too chickenshit to say anything about it.  Everyone built it up so much that I thought I couldn't possibly go wrong buying it.  Well I did.  The songs just seem to wander around.  Production horrible, yes.  The only redeeming element (but not by much) I thought was the keyboardist.  Some really crazy technical craziness...but I'd rather hear it coming from a guitar.

The production > is bad (listen to that snare!), and the singer's voice, which was raved > about by pretty much everybody, is nothing special. First off this kind of music needs more than one listen, just like all great music. PoS are not immediate band, you time to spend more time with the CD's. Second, if you'd bothered to listen properly and for more than 30mins you hear that the production is very good indeed. And that there are different snare sounds throughout the album. With a number of songs having a different snare sounds to suit the song. > These guys sound like > they are playing progressive and heavy JUST TO PLAY PROGRESSIVE AND HEAVY. > Nothing inspired; nothing caught me off guard. Music like this is SUPPOSED > to catch you off guard. Actually Entropia is a great album and a lot of PoS fans like it better than Concrete Lake. So again before mouthing off, at least give it a chance. Bottom line you are entitled to not like PoS, but you haven't really given them a chance. They play a different kind of prog metal, so maybe you just aren't used to their style. > Now, Soilwork's disc is an entirely different story - these guys are tight! > Very impressive. They sound very much like Nevermore TRY to sound like... > :) They sound nothing like Nevermore, try In Flames, but they are a tade more trashier. My guess is that you're not talking about the same people though. People who love boots will probably pick up the official, live release too. On the other hand, maybe someone will want to argue the "fuckwit" case. Well, I definitely aimed that at those who used the fact that they owned boots with similar setlists to justify not buying the official release. We all know why that is unacceptable, so no need in rehashing it here. I myself enjoy boots that offer something out of the ordinary. I have the Scenes From Connecticut boot, which is identical to what was played the following night at the Roseland, but in no way could that be a viable substitute to the official live album. My balls tingle in anticipation... >>Agreed. I'm not a boot fan (as opposed to a booty fan). And you're correct, I'd much rather see a beautiful ass than hear it... Actually, one of my ex's had a nice looking *and* sounding ass. She could fart the entire Mikado on request. Heh, heh...I always had her beat with my hyper-lethal Dutch Oven, though. >>Hmmm. I think you're right there. If "fan" is really short for "fanatic", some of us must not be fans. But we still like them a lot. ;) I was using the term "fan" rather loosely, so yeah, I guess I meant to say "for people who like them a lot..." Well, you may not like Gildenlow as a singer, and that'll probably whisk you right out of PoS land altogether, but... 1) Entropia is one of the greatest things ever recorded. 2) All the more stunning since it's their first album (and, yes, I too make the assumption that bands get better with time, so I shied away from Entropia at first too). Big mistake. 3) I've to say, I love Entropia and TPE, but I DON'T like Concrete Lake. It's simply too dark and brooding to me. Entropia's got all the funk and jazzy stuff, and so, really, does their latest, but OHbtCL just seems to be the band at a reall, dark, low place. Can't blame you there at all. 4) What's with me numbering everything? 5) PoS is NOT my favorite band, but I have NEVER seen a live performance from anyone like the one they pulled off at ProgPowerUSA. DT's very good live, but they're not even in the ballpark, and I think that others that were there might back me up on that. Anyway, DON'T trade Entropia until you listen at least once. It hit me like a ton of bricks and that was after I'd already been let waaaay down by OHbtCL. Mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Michael Schenker's "The Odd Trio", and Tony Palacios' "Epic Tales of Whoa!" first, let's start with the schenker...... "The Odd Trio" appears right off the bat to be something totally uncharacteristic of what we've come to expect from michael over the past several albums. it, like the last few, is completely instrumental. however, whereas the last couple of albums, namely "Adventures Into the Imagination" & "Dreams and Expressions" were very lead-oriented (meaning lots of riffage & crazy soloing, weird breaks & times, etc.), this album tends to lend itself more to a groove-feel, with schenker holding back on some of the more extrenuous soloing for the sake of layering some really nice melodies & harmonies, both acoustic & electric. as before, it's only a trio (hence the name), with Harry Cobham on bass (never heard of him, but he's fantastic), and Kathy Brown on drums. this album is just a solid rock 'n roll instrumental, and shows a more groove-oriented, rhythm playing style of schenker. very tasty. now moving on to tony palacios. for those of you that have never heard of him, you NEED to check him out. he is by far one of the most inspired players i have ever heard, and "Epic Tales of Whoa!" displays this inspiration with flying colors. this album is a collection of so many different styles of playing, ranging from jazz, blues, ballad, world, to some Vai & Satch influences as well. i would say there's several glimpses of Steve Morse here as well. for you guitarists out there, as well as those that just eat guitar-instrumentals up at every chance, this is one of the most passionately played, inspired, and heartfelt collection of notes i've heard in a long, long time. this comes from one who owns every satch, vai, johnson, schenker, moore, schon, beck, & sheetz album out there. i haven't heard anything this refreshing in years. get up from the computer, get in the car, and get this now. you'll never regret it, promise. that's my review for the week. enjoy. in the next couple of days, i'll be snagging the new Sherinian disk, "Inertia". i've heard a couple tracks off of it, and it impressed the shit out of me. it's nothing like the previous two solo efforts. the line-up on the album is: Sherinian - Keys Zakk Wylde - Guitar Steve Lukather - Guitar Tony Franklin - Bass Simon Phillips - Drums and i say again, holy shit. has anyone else on the jam checked this disk out yet? what's it like all the way through? it really sounds like it explores a TON of different styles, but wondered if there were any other thoughts on it before i get it. that, as well as the "Niacin" project, with: John Novello - Hammond B3 Billy Sheehan - Bass Dennis Chambers - Drums can't wait to see what they're all about. there will most certainly be reviews once they've been good & listened too. peace out. -ryften NP - Tony Palacios "Epic Tales of Whoa!" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Jun 2001 01:59:24 -0600 From: Chris Elder To: Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5874 Message-ID: on 6/6/01 3:20 PM, ytsejam@torchsong.com at ytsejam@torchsong.com wrote: > Tho it appears that I am in the minority, I pay the $25 for the fanzines! I think the "The Perfect Element" is one of the best recordings ever, a pure 10/10. As for OHBtCL, I would probably be disappointed if that was my first listen to PoS. It's the least accessible of their recordings, IMHO. I tend to appreciate OHBtCL, but I don't love it like TPE. As for Entropia, that would be my second favorite PoS. Much easier to get into.
