HAHAHAHAHA!!!! i would do the same if Satch put out another record! I
learned my lesson after buying 2 records that i did not like at all. ST &
Crystal Planet......i mean, i know some of you like these records,
but.....they just didn't do well enough for me. I would have a taste first
via some illegal mp3! THEN decide if i buy or not.

Wow, you hit the nail RIGHT on the head. Whenever I play Dt for someone,
their first reaction is "its too hard to follow, or there is too much
going on" We are the intelligent ones, with the long attention spans, we
get it. Thats what spearates DT fans from the pack.

Unfortunately, it becomes a case of forcing it on people...at least that is their perception.  I listen to all those old school prog bands 
much like your one friend BUT the difference is that I enjoy metal as well.  I think DT is an interesting hybrid that brings together an 
interesting mix of fans.  Look at what people on this board listen to.  Some listen to death metal, some like modern rock.  There is an 
intersection in all of this and that's where DT comes in.  I mean I grew up on KISS and YES so DT makes total sense to me.  I, too, 
am blown away when people don't give it a chance.  Those guys, eventhough they sat there, did not give the music a chance and had 
NO intention to do so.  Their loss.

So I was sat in my living room watching the SFNY DVD, and my housemates got home, and groaned "Oh here we go". But I 
persuaded them to sit down and pay atention, and credit where it's due: they sat through AMBI and ACoS. When it was done, they 
both agreed that while yes, it's technically very clever, it all sounds exactly the same.

I was pretty stunned by this comment; I man, I understand that other people don't LIKE Dream Theater, but I couldn't believe that 
anyone could think that it all sounds the same. And certainly not those four songs!! And these are not stupid Britney Spheres people; 
one is a Royal Northern College of Music graduate who listens to Yes, Genesis and King Crimson along with some indie shite, the 
other is one of the most talented drummers (in any time sig you like) that I know. And they reckon it sounds the same.

I thought I'd share that, because it made me wonder: what do people who don't lke Dream Theater think of it when you guys play it to 
them??

Hello!  I got the DT DVD the other day, and I must say
it rules.  Excellent performance, excellent camera
shots, very cool graphics.  Here are some of my
favorite parts:

- The Spirit Carries On was simply amazing with the
gospel choir.  Now I understand why people have cried
and stuff (I got goosebumps during this part). 
Theresa has an amazing voice, she kicks major ass.
- The audio commentary was awesome.  Very interesting
stuff and funny.  My favorite comment has to be the
"Japanese kids please put on your goggles", or however
Mike said it.  I just love how they made fun of each
other all throughout.
- Mike dropping one of his drumsticks while doing a
fill during I believe Erotomania.  His face when that
happened was worth a million bucks.
- The electric version of the Silent Man.  I just love
this version, it definitely kicks way much more ass
than the acoustic one.

I never thought we were going to get so much of the
show on the DVD.  One way or another, we get pretty
much the whole thing, except for Another Day, a piece
of Metropolis Pt. 1 and the ending of JLMB.  The guys
were pumped that night, and their performance shows
just that.  There are always some minor mistakes, of
course, but overall the performance was just amazing. 
Definitely a gem of a DVD.

without having to worry about spoiling it for somebody?

I never got that either; as far as pop singles go, that 
was a corker - and backed with TWIUTB, for crying out 
loud! There is NO reason why that shouldn't have ben DT's 
first #1.

Although personally, I prefer the demo version with that
neat little bridge part. :)

One thing I've noticed is that, for people who aren't fans of a particular
genre, almost any single band's songs in that genre is going to sound pretty
much the same.  Take, for example, Fear Factory's obsolete.  When I first
heard it, I felt that it was all pretty much the same song over and over.
On closer listenings, though, I could start to hear differences, etc.

But is it really that hard to think that someone would say that AMBI and
ACoS sound the same?  Erotomania is a wanky instrumental; ACoS has wanky
instrumental parts; voices is a heavy song with high, sweeping vocals; ACoS
is a heavy song with high, sweeping vocals;  The silent man is a more chill,
clean guitar-driven song; again, ACoS has parts similar to that.  So,
someone who's sitting there listening to music they don't really like just
to humor their roommate would probably very easily think that it all sounds
the same.
