It surprises me that when speaking of Judas Priest recommendations, no one has so far mentioned the true classics of the band's prime: "Sin after Sin," "Stained Class," "Hell Bent for Leather," and one of the greatest heavy metal live albums of all time, "Unleashed in the East." To me, they went on a long decline after "British Steel," which was actually the beginning of the downward spiral, IMO, and only came back with "Painkiller." The live album with Tim 'Ripper' Owens on vocals, "Metal Meltdown 98," is actually very good as well, but I never bought "Jugulator" because the reviews for it were extremely mixed. Quite a few songs by Ozric Tentacles have a Middle-Eastern flair to them; they're quite diverse and any given CD could include anything from groove to spacey synths to reggae to miscellaneous world-music stuff. Off the top of my head their latest cd THE HIDDEN STEP has at least one song, "Aramanu" -- great to hear it live on the last tour, too. M.E. influence would extend at least 5 albums back, probably more. DT content: Mike Portnoy's a big Ozrics fan. My thought: they're the best band that hardly anyone's ever heard. :) There's also a song on Superior's BEHIND cd that has a kewl middle-eastern "bridge" to it -- "Escape from Reality" at about 2:30 into the track. I just had to reply this, being a big fan of Etho / World music. It would be blaspheme speaking on this topic and not mentioning the Balkans. The Balkans are a pass over Europe and Asia, thus it contain incredible mixture of both cultures. I guess those countries would be my Macedonia, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia, and Turkey maybe. There is also one awesome Hungarian band called Tin-Tin Quartet who uses far east and middle east ethno influences, and also play such weird looking instruments. :) So speaking of eastern stylings, you just have to stick to THIS region of the world. :) There are many awesome bands who have eastern influences, in genres varying from ethno rock to pure world music. If only they'd taken some time to write some tunes and melodies, instead of just being heavy for the sake of it, the album could have been *much* better.
