Black is black, but yellow mustn't be trifled with. So it's down to Jersey for a looksee. They look nice. It's going to be a bit more of warmer yellow than i'd hoped but it looks good. Not schoolbus yellow(which is orange), certainly not "gold", just a nice rich yellow. of course it's not quite what i had put on the site, so we had to do a little re-adjusting of the inkcolors. Screenprinter's ink is thick gooey stuff that gets on you just by looking at it, so after 10 minutes of mixing inks, i remembered why I like designing 'em, not printing them. And that's just the ink. This isn't the easiest of the craft trades by far. So in case anyone was curious, let me explain a bit about the process of making t-shirts. Basically, you rub color onto the shirt using a stencil. of course if there's more than one color, you need more than one stencil. And ofcourse, when you remove the first stencil and place down the second one, you have to line it up perfectly. And the color from the first stencil can't touch anything(like your hands) or it will get all over everything. And, the stencil itself might have tiny imperfections that you could never possibly see, but you'll seethe little holes and dots on your shirt just fine as the result. So you have to go brush stuff over the holes in the stencil for where there's dots in the shirt, and for where there's holes in the shirt, you have to take a pin and poke the itty bitty piece of stencil that shouldn't be there. And, you have to lay the color down with a squeegee type device. In fact, it is a squeegee. you squeegee a blob of color across your stencil and where it's poked through, color will be on your shirt. But of course, you can't do it to slow or the color will be all lumpy and streaky. Too fast and it won't go down right either. wrong angle? start over. lift up squeegee during swipe? start over. sneeze? ha! gotta fart? that's no problem, the solvent fumes will hide the smell. See, you need to stretch the shirt across a little platform so it's flat when you rub the color across. And of course if it moves, start over. So you have to spray the little platform with adhesive spray, and then when you take the shirt off, there's a little film of shirt material still glued on. And, if there happens to be any molecules in the air just then, those will be stuck as well. By the 4th shirt you'll have a 1-inch think layer of crap adhered to your platform so you have to get it off. BUT IT'S ADHESIVE. So you have this huge vat of solvent(the one that's hiding your fart) by your side and the whole time you're printing, you're breathing it, especially when you open it every fourth shirt to clean your platform off. You'll also need the solvent to get the adhesive, the ink, and the dust, and the crap, off your hands, arms, eyes, shoes, other shirts, and the rest of the tri-state area. So anyway, i approved the yellow shirt, and i should have a final prototype soon, and then mass-production starts in earnest. Thankfully I won't be there for that part. I'll let you all know. -josh ------------------------------ Date: 16 Mar 2001 15:48:24 -0000 From: "Awake ."
