Too many people are afraid of the Wrath of Ahtrap, it seems. :)
Speaking of which, I wonder how many true old-timers are still left on the
'jam. I mean, I wouldn't consider myself a true old-timer, since I only
joined in '97, but I have a feeling that there aren't very many of us
left. There's what, Korgy, Pellaz, Partha, Ptacek, Al, Coldie's back...
but who else is around that's been a high-profile user (sorry, I obviously
don't know you five-year lurkers, heh) for several years?

Didnt Jimmy Johnson play with Allan Holdsworth?
Hmm... what do people think of Steve Lukather. The only stuff of his I have
is this instructional video he did and a concert with Jeff Beck and Santana both
of whom completely wipe the floor with him. What's he been doing recently?

Well, I'm not at all high profile, except for the brief exchange of
mini-flames with MP about the Deep Purple gigs(which I'm sure no one here
remembers besides me) way back in '98, but I've been here since around the
same time as you, Cloak. I read it all, just don't post much.
And I miss Bafu.
Kez, an elder 'Jammer, kind of.

Subject: what is prog?
Message-ID:
The other day, I had a discussion with my brother about progressive music=
=2E We
have some so-called progressive albums that we really like (full discogra=
phy
of DreamTheater, Spock's Beard, Vanden Plas (The God Thing actually does
resemble DT a lot), PoS, and some others), so I thought I knew what was
progressive.
I had this tune written which I concidered to be quite progressive. So I =
made
my brother listen to it, and he replied:'That's not prog. Your chords are=
all
wrong to be prog, blablablabla' Anyway, in short, he said that in order t=
o be
progressive, all chords should resolve in the next, while that was not th=
e
case in that song. Hence, the song was plain old anything-but-prog.
It made me think about something. I always thought about progressive musi=
c as
a complex melodic-oriented music. I never thought about theoretic
characteristics, as he did.
As some of you in this list are actual musicians with actual knowledge ab=
out
music, I'm asking you: what is it that makes prog prog?

I suggest that, since a lot of people (especially those of us who have
been on for a year or more) have seen this discussion WAY more than once,
that you check the ytsejam archives and look for answers there. :)
But truly, I think it's so pointless to try and put a label like progres-
sive on something you write. I mean, unless you're trying to cater to a
certain audience, why do you have to label your music? I dunno, I just
think that if you're arguing over whether it's prog or not, somebody's
missing the point of the music. I always hate these 'what is prog'
discussions that start up because it encourages us to limit our thinking.
Let's not do that.
