I might go with Edge of Thorns as a first Sava disc, because (even though they change members almost every CD) that was where their big transition came into play....It was the first album with Zak Stevens, their last with Criss Oliva, so it kind of foretells the next 8 years, while still looking back at the previous 8-9. The songs are more indicative of where they went afterwards, hinting at the somewhat symphonic metal direction they were to take through the end of the 90s, but with some songs retaining the crunch of where they had been.

As for Poets and Madmen, my first impressions is that they tailored it for Jon Oliva's vocals, returning to some of the riff styles that they used back in the 80s. A first couple of listens put me in the mind more of Gutter Ballet than of any of the stuff they did since, and while I'm liking it a lot, I can't help but keep thinking at certain points, " this part would have been soooo cool with Zak singing." This may well turn out to be one of those, "What might have been..." albums for me. The obvious dichotomy of zak=poets and jon=madmen (vocals wise) would have been interesting to hear.

Well, I'm not at all high profile, except for the brief exchange of mini-flames with MP about the Deep Purple gigs(which I'm sure no one here remembers besides me) way back in '98, but I've been here since around the same time as you, Cloak. I suggest that, since a lot of people (especially those of us who have been on for a year or more) have seen this discussion WAY more than once, that you check the ytsejam archives and look for answers there. :) But truly, I think it's so pointless to try and put a label like progres- sive on something you write. I mean, unless you're trying to cater to a certain audience, why do you have to label your music? I dunno, I just think that if you're arguing over whether it's prog or not, somebody's missing the point of the music. I always hate these 'what is prog' discussions that start up because it encourages us to limit our thinking. Let's not do that. ------------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://cout.dhs.org/ ------------------------------------------------- "It isn't pollution that's harming the environ- ment.
