Circus was pretty decent back then for metal, so was Kerrang. I hope I don't qualify for old-timer status yet, after all, I'm only 25......but Kurt's "whoah, <random band> has a new CD out," story completely meshes with the way I bought "Awake." I just happened to drop into Tower records to kill time between classes, and saw "Awake" on the cassette rack (since I was at that time, late 1994, still a bit away from joining the CD using ranks), and just grabbed it. Since I didn't get on the internet until the very last days of 1994, I had had no idea it was coming out, as Dream Theater wasn't a band with wide name recognition at that point (unlike Queensryche, whose Promised Land album came out at about the same time; unlike DT, they had posters in the record stores in advance of that date announcing the release.)

For useless trivia's sake, the Scarface album released in 1994 came out the same day as Promised Land.....I remember that because I bought that for my rap fan brother on that trip into the music store.....that too was a, "I didn't know this was coming out," kind of purchase. (Not that i care for Mr. Scarface of the Ghetto Boys, but my brother's birthday was just a few days later)
