I was wondering, when DT has used samples of actors voices from movies on Awake, ACoS, etc, did they have to go through any legal process to get them? That is, did they have to get permission from the actors to use their voice, or, if the rights to the voice by the actor being in the movie are given to the film studio, did they have to get permission to use an audio sample from the movie? I didn't see any indication in the liner notes that I remember that the clips were "courtesy of" anyone or anything, and even if DT simply ignored any possible copyright issues, they certainly (to my knowledge) haven't had any legal action taken against them. Message-ID: Hey folks.. I recently had my car stereo and just over 400 CDs stolen, including a heap of bootlegs. I'm looking for a few people who would like to do some high-speed boot trading over the Internet. Obviously I'm not talking about MP3s here. I'm planning to use Shorten ("SHN" format) which compresses WAV files about 2:1, but loses absolutely no quality. Phish, Grateful Dead, and Widespread Panic traders all use this format and it's excellent. Of course, one needs a high-speed Internet connection to do this since a single 2-disc show is several hundred megabytes. If anyone is interested in this and has a dsl/cable/T-1/etc connection, please email me privately (I don't have time to read the 'Jam, unfortunately). Basically, we'd decide what to trade, rip the CDs to WAV format and compress them to SHN (just like ZIPing a file). I've got an FTP server up and we'd just transfer like crazy both ways overnight (or over a few nights). My SDSL connection gets about 45-50k/sec both ways. I'm looking for someone with at least 30k/sec both ways. My bootleg list is in the webpage below, but I haven't updated it to reflect the lost discs yet. I've got most of my recent stuff (M2000 tour) and some older stuff, but most of my older stuff was lost. So anything someone might want I'll have to look for. I'm also looking to get some bands other than DT (Savatage, S-X, and some more mainstream stuff), so send over a list with your email. Let me know, and take care... (pretty please?) I'm in the market to get a new surround-sound receiver (for movie watching and music-listening, but more for movies). I'm kinda drawn to Denon, considering that I've listened to some Denon systems before (and was impressed), plus I've heard nothing but good about Denon. Anyways, I (being the complete novice) am a bit confused. I was scoping out the Denon website, and I see that they have 2 seperate lines of receivers. They have their 'Home Audio' line (with 4-digit names, ranging from AVR 1601, to the ultra-expensive AVR 5800), then they have their slighly less expensive 'Speciality Audio' line (which, by the way are the units they sell in some retail stores), which have the 3-digit model names, ranging from AVR 681, to AVR 981. I'm not quite sure what the differences are. The website describes the 'Specialty Audio' stuff as "...our derivative product models...". Does this mean that these are products they don't actually make, but just put their name on, or something? Stats-wise, I'm too dense to really know what the hell they're talking about. I see that surprisingly the cheaper 'Specialty' stuff has pretty beefy wattage-numbers compared to the slighty more expensive 'Home' line stuff (for example the AVR 981 which retails at around $799 lists the wattage as 135 X 5, whereas the AVR 3300 which retails at $899 or $999 lists the wattage as 105 X 5). That alone kinda confuses me! ;) One thing I noticed that was different (not sure if it's important or not though...) is that the 'Home Audio' ones list that power as being into "8 ohms", whereas the cheaper 'Specialty' models list the wattage "into 6 ohms". What the heck does that mean? Is 8 ohms better? I definitely want somethhing that has Dolby Digital 5.1 and also DTS, and I'm probably looking at one of the mid-priced models (leaning towards the 3300 I think, or the 2801, or possibly the 981). I've seen the 3300 (on the internet) for around $660 or so, which seems pretty reasonable, and I could also buy the 981 at a local store for $515 (I have a friend who works there). BTW, I currently have a Nakamichi AV-500 (which I can sell for a few hundred bucks to put towards the new receiver). The Denon would be a pretty big step-up, wouldn't it? I don't know if fair use really applies to movie clips, though. That having been said, it is ALWAYS best to gain permission from a copyright holder when using ANY part of his or her intellectual property. If you plan on using a movie quote in a piece of music, check with the movie studio first, obtain a written release of permission, and then you can be absolutely sure that what you have is legally binding.
