Metallica's General Manager, Lars Ulrich, held a press conference today at 1pm EST, announcing the trade. "This will bring about a new era for Metallica." Lars also announced the new album, which will be available for release in 2002, was has been recorded with lead guitarist Kirk Hammett on bass. Rumors were recently confirmed regarding a feud between bassist Newsted and Hammett, regarding the number of solos each member got. Such opportunities are few and far between in an offense that revolves around Ulrich and Hetfield, whom many have likened to the classic duo of Elton John and Bernie Taupin. Ulrich says Myung will be a valuable addition to the band's sound. "We hope he can keep up," Ulrich admitted. "We'll be dropping him into the thick of things early. Not only will he have to cover all of Jason's old parts, but he may have to write his own bass lines." Ulrich smiled as he expounded on the challenge. "I expect the technical aspects of Metallica will be a challenge to him, but we know he has potential." In a similar news conference, Dream Theater General Manager Mike Portnoy explained his view on the trade. "We're looking towards the future. With the talent level was have currently, a draft pick would have a hard time fitting into the system." Portnoy smiled as he answered questions of money concerns. "Yes, the huge sacks of cash were a factor." Portnoy handed out 100-dollar bills to the group of reporters, and lit a cigar with a small pile of cash he lit with a gold Zippo. "Smell that money," he commented moments before the sprinkler system turned on. In a special outdoor follow-up session, Portnoy explained more of his plans for Dream Theater's future. "We're looking at other bassists… certainly the trading isn't finished yet." Rumors have placed Newsted and James LaBrie in the veteran band Rush for frontman Geddy Lee, as well as a persistent rumor involving Newsted and rookie drummer Melody Portnoy going to Yes for Alan Young and Chris Squire. Sources in the Rush camp deny the rumor saying the band is in no position to trade, given the new hard salary-cap rules set in place at the beginning of the season. "We've been in talks with a number of bands," Portnoy commented. "Until we win The Grammy, no position is completely safe from trade speculation." Dream Theater's record has been slipping of late. They are fifth in the Eastern Conference, at just above .500. Metallica is currently at the top of the Western Conference, with a .745 record. The trade comes as a small surprise, being only two weeks before the All-Star break. Newsted currently leads all bassists in voting. Moving to the Eastern Conference nullifies his chances of joining either team for the All-Star concert. Second-place vote-getter Flea will probably get the starting nod, his 8th All-Star appearance in his 17-year career with RHCP. News Around the League: · Guitarist James Iha re-injured his wrist after attempting to play a difficult series of 16th notes. The former Smashing Pumpkins guitarist, now playing for Green Day as a backup, says he will return to form in four to six weeks. · Aerosmith singer Steve Tyler is announcing his retirement after this season, citing chronic injury to his vocal cords and a nagging strained upper lip. He will miss tomorrow's concert against downtown rivals Boston. Aerosmith holds a 156-2 record against Boston over their history. · Wide Mouth Mason has been announced as a possible expansion candidate. The Canadian rockers have said they'll do anything to get into the league, adding that they've already sent the League their plans for a new album. League officials declined comment. Other expansion candidates include Zen Guerilla, and DoubleDrive. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 12:46:31 -0800 From: "Dr. Mosh" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Headline: Metallica, Dream Theater in megatrade Message-ID: On Wed, Jan 17, 2001 at 11:44:41AM -0800, Matthew Johnston wrote: > > January 17, 2001 > In a stunning development, league-leaders Metallica have traded bassist > Jason Newsted and cash to Dream Theater in exchange for John Myung and > two first-round draft picks. I spent six months in Chicago during the summer. Chicago's train system is top notch. Terminal for the Blue Line is located in O'Hare, and one for the Orange Line is in Midway. Don't look like a sheep/tourist (e.g.: don't have maps in hand, don't look lost or fearful) and you'll be OK. Best part - $1.50 per ride. "El" stations are not typically luggage friendly, though. You may have to lug yer luggage up a couple flights of stairs. Cabs will cost you dearly. Expect a ride from O'Hare to downtown to cost upwards of $30 -- with no traffic. You would have to be insane to consider driving around Chicago if you aren't a native. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Jan 2001 15:35:11 -0800 From: Mark Peters To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Live Bonus Tracks/Diablo 2 Message-ID: ]From: "Nick Bogovich": > The promotional French CD you all seem to be confusing > Trial of Singles for is called Live Bonus Tracks. > On LBT are Caught In A Web '96, Burning My Soul (live), > Another Hand / The Killing Hand (live), and Take Away=20 > My Pain (live). To be honest, that sounds like a must-buy album; Luke is one of my favourite guitarists (Ernie Ball must surely now rank above Ibanez in terms of artists...They have JP, Luke, Steve Morse and Tony Levin - who are Ibanez stuck with? Satch, Paul Gilbert, the guys from System of a Down and Vai. Well, spank my ass and call me charlie.), and Simon Phillips is the only drummer that I would rank above MP, so the cast is assured to be excellent. And - call me a twat if you wish - I quite like Derek's writing style. Anyway, anyone? ~SJD p.s. check out the new Petrucci models at Ernieball.com. sweet!
