Aghora has been mentioned here a few times. I was a bit disappointed about this cd. I didn't like the female vocals. It sounds like someone is humming along with de cd. The songs themselves are clearly influenced by cynic, but they are not as spectacular to me. Focus from cynic is indeed in my all time greatest list; maybe my expectations were too high... Message-ID: I have had this for about 3 years now. It still records great. This multitracker uses regular 1/4 tapes. The same ones that are used in home stereo and in cars. The XR-7 just uses them a bit different so no special recordable media is needed. It's a 6 input four track recorder capable of ping ponging tracks. It has two aux fx sends. High and low eg for inputs 1-4 and high, low and para mid for inputs 5 & 6 as well as the Left and Right Busses. Great beginner multitracker! I've decided to go to only one concert after all... Tickets weren't really cheap and they were being sold with a promotional price only until yesterday (Sunday), and given my recent spending with the Symphony X gig I don't have that much money in store right now... And up until the time I left to go buy my ticket the only info I'd gotten was in the MP.com forum, and the dude told me he'd seen Vai play the same set on back to back nights... Com" Subject: Symphony X live - Sat 25/11 Message-ID: Well, in the absence of anything to say about OFB - I might as well talk about my next most favourite band (well one of them, at least) - Symphony X. Apologies to those who've read other versions of this report elsewhere. Having finished their jaunt to South America, their kit finally arrived in Europe and they kicked off their short European tour last thursday. Shortage of fund meant that I had to make do with the Saturday show in Paris for the Hard Rock Festival. Briefly: there were 6 bands who played during 6 hours between 4PM and 10 PM, so we got short sets from all concerned with 10 minute beer/pee breaks in between. The gig was well organised and for the main part, the sound was very good. Something between 1300 - 1500 people were there - including a small number of Japanese who came over for the show, plus a good number of Germans, a handful of Brits, Kiwis and Mr Metzger, over from the USA to get his annual fix of European Metal shows and taking in a few vineyards on the way. Heavenly: A french band kicking off a french event - made sense. Apparently this was their first ever gig and they had plenty of energy, but I didn't go a bundle on the singer. They play a very Helloween-inspired sort of Metal, which isn't normally my thing - and on this occasion it didn't win me over. The band hit it off well with the crowd and cranked up the atmosphere nicely. Avalon: Lots of wolf-whistles from the crowd for the bassist Petra, who certainly impressed with some pounding playing and she strutted around stage very impressively. This was one of the bands I was most keen to see, but unfortunately they only had time to crank out 5 numbers, the most impressive of which was 'Black Hole Wisdom' - I need to hear this band play a longer set - after I've given their new album - 'Eurasia'a few more spins. Double Dealer: Jap Metal band made of members of Concerto Moon and Sabre Tiger. They played at least 2 concerto moon numbers - including the excellent 'A Time To Die' as set closer. The crowd loved Shima, the guitarist - but I think I've had my fill of Malmsteen-like metal and couldn't get excited about them. The crowd seemed to enjoy 'em though. Majestic: Like Avalon and SX, one of the bands I really wanted to see - especially after having heard the track 'Voodoo Treasure' which I love. They started with an instrumental and burned thru about 6 numbers during their alloted time. Have to admit I was a bit disapointed - they played fast, but without my sould. I need to listen to the whole CD and re-assess 'em. Metalium: Their set was nicely planned so that I could take a breather and freshen up for the headliners, but while sat out in the entrance hall, I heard enough of the set to be pleasantly surprised and I returned to the hall for the final number and encores. Impressive stage persona and nice outfits, everything about them was ultra-professional. However, I remain unimpressed by their own material. I wasn't alone - certain sections of the crowd were already chanting for the show's headliners. Symphony X: Awesome!!! I expected a great show and they delivered - in spades. The entire audience was really pumped up for the show and I really hope that it will show on the live disk they were recording this show for. The Vanden Plas live disk was recorded in the same hall with an audience that was half of the size of this one. That sounds great so I have high hopes of the Symphony X disk being a monster too. Russell Allen was enormous - in terms of stage presence. His performance of the new material was breathtaking - the fantastic singing we are familiar with from disk, plus this awesome energetic persona that charged around the stage, headbanged, played air guitar and just lived and breathed the music. I'd have been quite happy just to hear a perfect rendition of the music, but Russ as a front-man was just awesome. They were somewhat restricted by time, so we only got an 80 minute set, made up of some new material and some old stuff. I already knew that Michaels Romeo and Pinella were awesome, but the Michael Lepond was awesome on bass too! They are definately up there with the big boys in terms of talent and material now and in terms of stage presence they beat DT hands-down on this evidence. It was disappointing to have the show finish at 9:50PM. The audience clearly hadn't had enough and screammed for more - on most nights they would have got it. Anyway, it was still a great show and fantastic value for money. I only wish I could afford to make a second show - this one has left me desperate to see these guys again before they disappear again for another 2 years. The set list was 9 tracks from 'V' - from 'Prelude ' to 'Death of Balance/Lacrymosa' with the beginning of 'Candlelight' in there somewhere. Then we got 'The Eyes of Medusa', 'Of Sins and Shadows' and 'Church of the Machine'. 'Sea of Lies' and 'Smoke and Mirrors' for encores. The following night in Strasbourg was also recorded. This is going to be one to look out for in 2001 Charlie ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 21:38:35 -0500 From: Dan Costello To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: JP/JR & HOB Message-ID: >When I get back to school, I'll put them up on my web server for you, but >it won't happen until tomorrow. > >Oh, and they're different than Bogie's version - it's my own, slightly >different sound (personally, I think it's better; more treble, less bassy >sound).
