But napster is specifically designed solely to allow zillions of mp3's to be traded back and forth. Clearly, nobody really cared about a little tape trading and even as mp3's became popular, nothing has caused the stir that napster has - because napster is on a whole different level. your argument might sit nicely with my mom, who thinks a thief is a thief. But yer both wrong. You can't say that to trade a tape with a friend is nearly as bad as dowloading a gigabyte of u2 songs(i'm gettin' there!). Obviously, it's worse to take some things than others. A friend of mine at his job place is trying to make MPEG videos of some stuff we have, one of them being the Steve Vai concert in Sofia this year! :)) Yummi He has video card - MATROX RT 2000. Now, he had some problems. How do we reduce the window size of the video so that the final mpeg is not bigger than 650-700 MB, in order to put it on 1 CD? He told me on screen resolution 700xsomething a 2 minutes video is 600MB huge. :( He's working in ADOBE PREMIERE for making the MPEG video. Any better program for that? Or how do we make the video with smaller window size? Thats just silly. Ive been caught speeding, so i have no argument against road laws? I use napster all the time and don't pay for any of the stuff i get, but i don't kid myself that what im doing isnt exactly legal and im not going to jump up and down screaming injustice if they close it down or anything. I morally justify my own actions because i fit in the catagory of people who wouldnt buy the stuff anyway and because i do my best to support musicians and artists whenever i get the opportunity, but, hypothetically, if someone gave me a petition, or whatever, to close napster i would be happy to sign it. Besides I think we already established that there is a significant difference between dubbing tapes for a friend and the large scale distribution of high quality copies that napster is doing. Companies consider the factor that some people are going just listen to tapes of CDs, so we end up paying a little extra (ever wonder how much computer software would cost if there was no such thing as piracy?) Most companies have not until now had to factor in the cost of potentionally hundreds of thousands of people stealing their product. > Huh? I think part of thing with Dream Theater is they have a monopoly on the prog metal market. If someone hears about prog metal, the first CD they're going go out and buy is Dream Theater. After that they'll probably buy a few more DT CDs and then maybe look into Fates Warning and Symphony X or whatever. No ones going to go out and stuff that's as weird as LTE unless they have a few DT CDs already. Kind of the same reason why BB King and Eric Clapton can sell millions of blues CDs whilst most blues musicians are sweeping floors. > NO. Go to http://www.pbsfm.org.au/ They have a prog metal show from 12:00midnight to 2:00 Australian time (I think we're about 16 hours ahead of america) on Wednesday. Last week they had an interview with Symphony X's singer and they play heaps and heaps of prog/power/symphonic/ neoclassical stuff. Lots of new releases. And of course lots of Dream Theater. PBS also has a jazz fusion show on Saturday, and lots of funky jazz shows throughout the week if you're into that sort of music. They also have metal shows all Wednesday evening. BTW. On a completely unrelated note, here's your useless fact for the day- Having been reminded of Douglas Adams' work through the recent threads on the jam, I was searching around on the internet. Napster does have some potentially GOOD uses but until there is remuneration to the parties that hold copyright, it is STILL a vehicle for misuse! Copying from cd's for your buddy IS just as "wrong" (as you put it) to someone using Napster. But... as the saying goes, Let he who is without sin cast the first stone!! I'm pretty sure that we have all violated copyright at some point in our lives!
