More than a handful of people had planned on buying both the import and the U.S. version, as to support the band as much as possible (the band makes more money from sold Japanese copies, btw). It would have been nice if we could have at least had a chance to chalk up a thousand or so record sales in the first week, showing MetalBlade that they have a band that's actually gonna sell. But how can we do that when the CD is absolutely NOWHERE to be found? MetalBlade is going to get a nice e-mail from me about this. Anyway, speaking of things I kinda wasn't expecting to see in stores, I got my SFAM tab book the other day! I haven't had the chance to really delve into it yet and check for mistakes (which I've heard exist despite JP's "meticulous" editing), but so far for the most part it looks right. I have my work cut out for me! :) Peace, Brian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 12:34:39 -0400 From: "HJ Rivera" To: Subject: Re: Symphony X Message-ID: <002c01c03858$253ce840$message_id_removed> People. It's pretty simple. Metal Blade sucks at distributing their releases, so you have to take matters in your own hands. What I did was I preordered my copy through a local shop. When they saw that at least one person was so eager to get it, they had an extra three copies on the shelf. Sadly, the days of walking into a record store and finding what *you* want are over, unless you show your local stores that there is demand for these albums. I bought entire SPock's Beard catalog at the same local shop and when V came out (SB's V), they had it - and I didn't have to preorder it. You're going to have to work along with the stores if you want to see results. joe NP: Dare - Run to me.mp3 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 11:36:15 CDT From: "Dale Newberry" To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Symphony X-V Message-ID: I could be wrong, but I'm pretty positive I saw the new Symphony X album (V) at Best Buy in the St. Louis area (don't remember which store specifically, though, since there are a few around here). You gotta figure *some* promotion in the US is better than none (the way it's been for the past five-plus years). Honestly, there's no use in bitching about metal albums not being in your local music store -- it should be a foregone conclusion that most decent metal just does not sell in this market, and that most record store owners, many of whom don't even listen to the music they sell, buy accordingly. It sucks, but unfortunately it's the way it is. If you really want to help out Symphony-X, play the album for your friends and, if they like what they're hearing, tell 'em to buy a copy via mailorder. Or, call your local college radio station and ask 'em to play it. My two cents. In other news, all Opeth fans on this list (I know there's bunch of y'all) need to check out the new Enslaved album, "Mardraum: Beyond The Within". It will not disappoint! Besides, I needed to justify buying my burner. I wanted to capture some of their live stuff, but not overlap a bunch of tracks, which was tough. I did get four different shows captured, and while three were Derek-era, they are each different and express a different side of the band live. Plus, it includes a bunch of rarer tracks, and the SFAM medley, which removes a lot of what I thought was filler (did BTL really need to be 11 minutes long?). The story isn't as coherent in this version (especially since Terry Brown's hypnotherapist is completely removed), but it serves well as a shortened, "best of the best" version that reminds the listener of good memories listening to SFAM and going "holy shit, that fucker's on fire!" as their stereo begins to smoke. The best part was that I did the discs one at a time, not really thinking about which tracks would go on which disc, and still, there was no loss in quality from Disc 1 thru 4. That's an amazing comment on the quality of DT tracks, that someone (granted a DT anboy) can come up with 308 minutes of DT tracks all of the same high quality to be considered "best of." Anyway, the men in white coats are here, so I gotta put on the weird jacket with the long sleeves and take the blue pill. --Matt "Too dry, Phish die." --Scott Adams' "Adventureband" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Oct 2000 14:55:48 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5642 Message-ID: << I can't look up the site at the moment, but just out of curiosity, is this guy in his 40's, smoke, and have long, thinning black hair? I called in advance to verify they were receiving copies on the release date. At that time they informed me they were only planning on ordering two copies. Well anyway... Thanks to Napster, I downloaded and burned the complete CD a few weeks prior to the US release. I made three CDs and gave two of them to select friends that were in a position to expose several people to this new stuff. I'll get to my point... :) By the time October 10th rolled around, we had 30+ people waiting to buy this CD! I informed Cheapos of this and they responded by ordering 25 CDs on the initial order! RIGHT ON CHEAPOS!!! I stopped in on Friday the 13th (A good day to travel around a large metropolis surfing the local record stores) and they were down to five copies. Unfortunately, the entire strip-mall cheapos resided in, burned to the fucking ground on Monday the 16th! SHIT!!!!!! I think they were the only store in town that had physical possession of the CDs. But I could be wrong. This sucks! My favorite record store has been reduced to digital ruin... Fortunately, they have several stores. But that one was the most prog friendly. Plus, they were open seven days a week until midnight. With the exception of the eves of release dates... They stay open until 12:30 AM so us early birds could get the worm.. :) So here is a shining example where Napster has generated revenue for the RIAA pricks. Revenue otherwise lost... Incidentally, myself and the other two recipients of the illegal home-brew CDs, had possession of the commercial US version within five minutes of the LEGAL release time! Those arrogant RIAA pricks should realize that people will pay for QUALITY entertainment. I like the liner notes. I like the superior sound quality. My home-brew CD was constructed from 256k bitrate MP3s. The commercial CD BLOWS IT AWAY! It's not subtle at all. Even on modest playback gear the CD of MP3 origin got it's ass handed to it in the sound quality department. Maybe the RIAA has a legitimate bitch. I can't see the average "Pink" fan giving a fuck about sound quality...
