SFaM :) I checked the review they gave to it, and it's pretty positive.. Amazon.com=20 Progressive rock has long been the most devalued currency in popular music, perhaps due to the culture's dumbing down, too many conceptually knotted triple-albums, or merely a Greek chorus of critics parroting the emperor from Amadeus: "Too many notes!" Maybe that's what makes Dream Theater's Scenes such an audacious rush (no pun intended). Here we have a two-act murder mystery examined from a hypnotic dream state and parlayed by "The Orchestra," as the band refers to itself here. Andrew Lloyd Webber hasn't written anything as focused--or musically audacious--in decades. And if the band attacks feverish shift meters and plows through enough structural modes and, yes, notes, to make the aforementioned emperor's head spin, they manage to keep things concise, focused, and largely effective. The addition of keyboardist Jordan Rudess has freshened the band's tack, infused now with the odd, playful ragtime piano quote and sitar sample. Vocalist James Labrie, meanwhile, amply proves that Queensryche's Geoff Tate isn't the only drama queen in prog metal. --Jerry McCulley=20 op7777 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |O-P Komonen, Linnankatu 4 A 13, 13100 H=C4MEENLINNA, FINLAND | |Phone: (home)+358-3-6822239, (cellular) +358-400-498266 | |e-mails: email_address_removed, email_address_removed.fi (attachments here) | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 02:08:10 -0700 (PDT) From: "T. And y'know, maybe Bob Dylan sticks too much to the guitar-based songs and nasal singing. For that matter, don't you think that BB King sticks TOO MUCH to the blues genre and that style? ;) Doesn't it go without saying that, being a prog band, DT are quite likely to - shock! horror! - stick within the confines of prog? Lord knows, I've never found another band with anything like the broad range of styles that DT incorporates within the prog framework; but ultimately, they ARE a prog band! ~Simon Sign-up for free Buffy the Vampire Slayer e-mail at http://www.buffymail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Sep 2000 10:33:32 -0400 From: Josh Brand To: Ytsejam Subject: Yahoo show on CD... Message-ID: Hey all ye 'jammers... got a gift of sorts for ya... As a little challenge for myself in using sound editing software, I decided to grab the maritime show to disk and burn it to two discs... and so I have. I even made cheesy cover art using the software we have :) When I got done, I asked myself, "If I were me, and less motivated, would I like a copy of this?" My answer was yes. Yes, the sound quality is less than excellent. Yes, there are pops here and there from clipping. But, it is a live show to listen to _away_ from your computer until such time as we can all run (not walk) to the store and buy a new live album/DVD (nudge, nudge wink, wink Mike...just kidding, I know you're workin' on it!). So... first, if anyone is interested, go to Yahoo and listen first: http://www.broadcast.com/entertainment_and_arts/music/genres/rock_and_pop/artists/dream_theater/ Try before you buy... well, not really buy... if you want a copy more or less gratis, send me an e-mail privately, I will send you an address, you send me two CD-R blanks with a few bucks to pay to mail them back to you, you get show. Simple as 1-2-3. Anyway, just thought it'd be cool to allow everyone else to listen to it while they're in the shower too... On an unrelated note, in a recent 'jam someone mentioned that for spontenaity, among other things, to bust out "Nightmare Cinema." My question is, now that Derek is outta there, can Jordan play anything else besides keys? Otherwise it's him and James stuck where they are. Maybe Jordan could sing... and James could play, um, basketball outside. Well, maybe not as interesting as the first incarnation of NC (which I saw the first North American performance of in Chi-town...it whipped a lynx's ass)...but something to think about. Whew! Enough for one day... Josh -- Ugarte: You despise me, don't you? We did pretty well last year, with about 15 teams, if I remember correctly. This year will be a little different as we will be able to draft a team. I set the league for an auto-draft since it will probably be difficult to get everyone together for a live draft. I also made the maximum number of teams to 20, so try and get in early if you can. All info on point scoring should be listed when you sign up. If there are any questions, feel free to e-mail me offlist. Here's the info: League ID: 2608 password: dream I will also be sending this message to the Freaks list and Thoughts list like I did last year in order to get more teams. I agree with Countermarsh on this one, though. Different music is made for different reasons. And since I'm on the road to becoming the most bad assed, most pretentious, head up his own ass guitar player in the world, I've found an awesome flamenco guitar teacher ( http://www.Chrisburtonjacome.com ) right here in Phoenix/Scottsdale, AZ. And for the first time in my 5 years of learning guitar on my own accord...I have a teacher! After informing me that Esteban is NOT flamenco, but simply latinized pop music, he clued me in on Paco de Lucia. So I went to the record store, and found a 1981 CBS recording of Paco, John McLaughlin, and Al DiMeola concert...USED! The shop keeper couldn't believe it either. We both assumed the seller must've been some guy who sold his guitar for a turn table. Or the pissed off girlfriend of a musician. I think Ptacek was raving about this CD earlier (maybe it was in the #ytsejam, I forget where), and I wish I took up his advice back then. Awesome CD set for guys like me who are addicted to the sound colors of steel string and nylon string guitars. It's titled "Friday Night In San Francisco," and it's a pretty simple cover design with all three guitar gods' names over a black background. This is one HELLLLLLLLLLL of a recording. A must have for any guitarhead. I'm so slow about this kinda stuff :) Now, I'm wondering...is there anything I should dare ask for, that's in the vein of a mix between insanely heavy music and the sexy sounds of flamenco...a Death Metal Flamenco ensemble? bwahahahahhahahahaha.....You know you like the idea!
