No racial bullshit. BTW, the reason for the concerts to get cancelled was all about some assholes here in Turkey, who organise the 2nd show in another city in Turkey couldn't make some arrangements clear on time, which caused both concerts get cancelled. So it has nothing to do with cultural, racial, money etc thing; it's a Turkish promoter's fault. And you can't tell me what should be talked about or not. It's a free list. MacAlpine is a good addition (duh), > but Brett Garsed was no slouch, either. MacAlpine is a rock player, trying to play fusion. I don't mean that in the egotistical jazz guy sense... I myself am a rock guy trying to play fusion. The problem here is that he won't abandon enough of his cliches and signature licks to make the transformation, and what you end up with is something that falls flat. Garsed had to work to alternate pick shred the way he does on the first PX... but Bret is a fusion master. He has his own unique style that tons of guitarists (guys like Greg Howe, even) have copied. I think that as a musician, he's way ahead of Tony. Tony is too much the technician, and doesn't cut loose well in this style yet. Anyone who has seen him do a show playing his neoclassical metal shred stuff knows that he could cut heads with Romeo and Yngwie in that arena. But he's a more shallow player than Bret... and I much prefer the way Bret adapted to this form of prog rock-fusion than the way MacAlpine did. > anyway, puts a huge hole in the album. It's much more > fusion-ish and groove-based. It's canned fusion. It's not more "fusion-ish" than the last album. It's basically rock tunes with an occasional stacked 4 chord and a modulation. MacAlpine predicts the key changes in an overly obvious and overstated manner, which makes it sound so much less alive than it could. > From: Kip Ratcliffe > Subject: Planet X Universe compared to Planet X > as varied as the first one. The drumming, care of Virgil Donati, is > incredible as always. In fact, there is a song that is about 3-4 minutes > of constant 32nd note double bass riding....the endurance that man > possesses is beyond me. It's that double-stroke technique. He uses it on his instructional video from back in 91. It's not as demanding (against one's stamina) as single strokes at that speed or faster like a lot of the death metal guys. But the killer thing is that he's able to put in dynamics with the constant rhythm (I don't remember whether it was 32nds or 16th note triplets) so that it has a texture, unlike most double bass drummers. Virgil, to me, is the saving grace of the album... the main thing to listen for. I love Derek and Tony, but I don't think they made an amazing album here. It's a dust collector for me. > haven't heard much of Tony MacAlpine before, but he's incredible on this > album. Plenty of solos, displaying his "lightning jazz/fusion scale run" That is exactly what I think sounds corny on this album. His method for rock and metal is to shred scales, sweep some arpeggios, and tap some licks. That's perfect for that vibe. The shredding scales sound in fusion is terrible. It's a sign that someone lacks the ability to phrase. I just don't think Tony did a good job on this... he played better fusion on "Guitar Madness." His shining moments are on the Maximum Security solo album (with Deen Castronovo and Atma Anur playing some awesome drums, btw). I think they're gonna make up for this album with the tour, though. Tony has a stage presence that you would NEVER guess he could have, and we all know Derek and Virgil's stage shows. I think that they will liven things up a lot live, and there's NO justification for not seeing a group of virtuosi like this when they come to town. But if it's true and they're playing with Fates Warning, that's a huge irony, since Derek sorta mocked me for liking Fates so much!!! - Chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 00:45:22 -0400 From: "TheCowGod" To: Subject: Re: racial? I wasnt able to attend, but everyone ive talked to told me megadeth ROCKED. And blew the doors off of Motley Crue, basically played them off the stage (im adapting a local expression here) The crowd reaction was supposedly awesome...and one of my friends, who does some concert promoting and stuff ( he brought Hammerfall, and has brought a couple of other obscure bands) said that Megadeth would definately come back (headlining)because they experienced an awesome crowd response, even if the concert was promoted as Motley crue w/ special guests megadeth.. - Come into this night, Your plight alone Carry your weight, You are flawed as all of us Come into this night, You only home Itīs never too late, To repent, suffer the loss Opeth : Benighted Carlos Alfaro Internet Solutions Inc. mailto:email_address_removed mailto:email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 07:37:18 -0500 From: "Souter, Jan-Michael" To: "'ytsejam@torchsong.com'" Subject: Christina / Britney Message-ID: <74ACE5A6CB89D3119E6F00609720274A01FC2047@ISDCRE00> Disagree with ya there partner :) > -----Original Message----- > From: Adrian Tunggono [SMTP:email_address_removed > Sent: Thursday, August 31, 2000 4:58 AM > To: Multiple recipients of list > Subject: thanks... > > > NP: Christina Aguilera (hey, she's far more decent than Britney Spears, > IMHO ;-) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 09:24:29 -0500 From: Kurt M Hampton To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: Megadeth Message-ID: < was disappointed in the concert. Anthrax and Megadeth were both to blame. Yes, it was Anthrax's fault because they kicked so much incredible ass and raised my expectations so damn high for Megadeth. It was Megadeth's fault because the new drummer/lead guitarist just don't "fit" to me. Jimmy Chamberlin's sound is too boomy/not enough punch, just like on "Risk," and on this night, at least, his precision wasn't there. Al Pitrelli played a Les Paul most of the night. Nothing against Al, but he ain't Marty Friedman, and his Les Paul ain't no Jackson. I don't like Motley Crue, so I didn't care that my VCR tape ran out of room 25 minutes into their performance :) And that "Return to Hangar" song or whatever it's called - the name should be "Attempted Return to Hangar." Megadeth, R.I.P.> Ok I did see the PPV I thoufght Anthrax was OUTSTANDING!!! They do kick major ass live, its a shame they can't get a break to save their lives> IMO they should be where Pantera is today, but something always happens. Megadeth-WTF How could you say you don't like the new stuff. Al P. is a breath of fresh air. MArty was 85 percent responsible for the music on Risk, thats why it sucked so bad. In a interview he said he was tired of playing metal and wanted to play more stuff like Matchbox 20 and Sugar Ray. THey guy sucked, and needed to be replaced. There is anothers ong called Kill the King, I highly reccommend jumping on Napster and go gettting it, it kicks major ass as well. Megadeth did get screwed over by Capitol, instead of releasing their new album, they are releasing a GH with 2 new songs from the sessions on it, this sucks, but at least Dave will be off that crap label. I hope DT played good last night. And one more thing, Jimmy Chamberlain played for the Smashing Pumpkins, Thats Jimmy Degrasso, if you are gonna talk shit about a band at least know who you are talking about. Kurt "Shut the f*ck up.
