It is updated as soon as I hear new news which is roughly every 2 days or so. Apparently Daniel Gildenlow likes it, he e-mailed me about it, which I was happy about. He even linked to it with some kind words on the official site without me even asking. Great guy. :-) It is on a pain-in-the-ass free server though, so sometimes the graphics don't come up right... I don't get it. Well, the graphics aren't why you are coming to site, anyway. Everything you ever wanted to know about Pain Of Salvation is there including stuff about the new album, (not the new video pics though, those are on the official site, I wouldnt steal those, go check them out!!! I have a link to it on my site.), stuff about the new tour, and every little tidbit of obscure junk I could fine. As an added bonus, it is written much more coherently than this email. http://painofsalvation.8k.com I was happy that I could find a band I love that Mark Bredius didn't already have a pretty site for :-) Don't steal this one from me Mark!!!! j/k, I love what you do. ---- Zack ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Aug 2000 18:43:17 -0700 From: "Adam N. Two quick questions. 1) I haven't seen too many reviews on Echolyn's 'Cowboy Poems Free'. How is this? Is it worth getting. Is it as good as the earlier stuff? 2) When are we going to get the next DTIFC Fanzine? Aren't there supposed to be 4 a year. I recall getting one so far and it's September in a couple days. THANKS! Is it worth getting. Is it as good as the earlier stuff? Outstanding -- easily worth purchase, I'd say. It's a lot more, for lack of better term, 'rockin' than their previous stuff. I wouldn't say aggressive, just venturing slightly more towards that end of the spectrum. That, the addition of a lot more elements of percussion, and a stronger preference for analog keyboard sounds from Mr. Buzby give the band a very different (different good) sound. A lot of the new stuff comes off better live than in the studio, but, ain't that the truth for most bands? Speaking of echolyn and live, they're supposed to start on a tour sometime this fall. Here's to hoping they will play a localish venue a little less, uh, cramped than the basement of the Crocodile Rock Cafe. I was fortunate enough to see DT at Maritime Hall in San Francisco on Aug. 16. First: did anybody happen to record that show (audio or video)? Second: they are apparently broadcasting it on yahoo, does anybody know how to record it when they broadcast it, is that possible? I have a slow connection (28.8 k, sad, I know) so I probably won't even be able to watch it, but if anyone would be able to record it and maybe burn it onto CD eventually, I'd be indebted to you, it was a great show and I'd really love to have some documentation of it. Vince Neil (who needs to lay off the buffet lines, it appears) said something about Randy Castillo being sick. Her playing was fine, if you care. I was disappointed in the concert. Anthrax and Megadeth were both to blame. Yes, it was Anthrax's fault because they kicked so much incredible ass and raised my expectations so damn high for Megadeth. It was Megadeth's fault because the new drummer/lead guitarist just don't "fit" to me. Jimmy Chamberlin's sound is too boomy/not enough punch, just like on "Risk," and on this night, at least, his precision wasn't there. Al Pitrelli played a Les Paul most of the night. Nothing against Al, but he ain't Marty Friedman, and his Les Paul ain't no Jackson. I don't like Motley Crue, so I didn't care that my VCR tape ran out of room 25 minutes into their performance :) And that "Return to Hangar" song or whatever it's called - the name should be "Attempted Return to Hangar." Message-ID: Am I the only one here who thought that PMU's ending is cool and brilliant from the first listen? It does not sound abrupt (in a bad way) to me, in fact, it's perfectly in time (is this the right term?) with the beat of the song, and if you follow the riff closely, it does end (gives the feeling of closure?) right where the whole song 'shuts down' and that IMHO makes the song more dramatic. Before PMU (OK, I know there are other songs by other bands that ends similarly, I just can't remember them right now), there are only two ways to end a song, with a 'fading out', or with an 'explosion'. There are variations, but I believe you all know what I mean. Now isn't PMU's ending progressive, compared to these two traditional ways? Or at least, shake the beauracracy known as TRL to it's rotten, soulless center. Ever get the feeling that show is rigged? Day in and day out it's like Parade of the Genetically Perfect singing songs so uninspired and unoriginal that even Ray Parker Jr. and Vanilli would have trouble sitting through them. Something is wrong here! Well, we at DMHC have the answer. On Wednesday, August 30th, we are encouraging Metaldom to unite and stand against this evil corporate empire by flooding TRL with votes for IRON MAIDEN'S "THE WICKER MAN." One of the stipulations for TRL is that the video must be less than 60 days old, and this is the one we came up with. We're not working for Iron Maiden or whatever label they're on. We just want a video that all of Metaldom can get behind. And let's not be picky - If you don't like Iron Maiden for whatever reason, still cast the vote for your love of Metal. Message-ID: Somone just complained that they got no repsonse on the Planet X s/t vs. 'Universe' question, so here are my general thoughts again: I think the first album is a classic, and it's one of my 'desert island' discs. The writing is fantastic, and with a rhythm section of Donati and Tony Franklin, well, that right there pretty much closes the door on anything that'd come thereafter... 'Universe': Derek is so addicted to basic rock riffs, it's not funny. MacAlpine is a good addition (duh), but Brett Garsed was no slouch, either. Tom Kennedy, Franklin's 'replacement' is obviously a good player, but he's little more than functional, which, to me anyway, puts a huge hole in the album. It's much more fusion-ish and groove-based. There is almost ZERO variety, which gets a little old after an hour. It is good. VERY good. But it ain't the first disc, and to be honest, I don't know if there'll ever be a time when I'm NOT conflicted over 'Universe'. Mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Planet X: Universe has more of a heavier feel to it, and the songs, unfortunately, are not as varied as the first one. The drumming, care of Virgil Donati, is incredible as always. In fact, there is a song that is about 3-4 minutes of constant 32nd note double bass riding....the endurance that man possesses is beyond me. As far as keyboards go, it's the same space-rock vibe as the first one, except there is more of an edge to it. This one is more fusion-rock oriented also, in that there are parts with off-time synth chords over a 4/4 groove, it's quite cool actually. Guitar-wise, I haven't heard much of Tony MacAlpine before, but he's incredible on this album. Plenty of solos, displaying his "lightning jazz/fusion scale run" capability. Everyone is heard better in the production, too. Plenty of heavy (crunchy!) guitar parts as well. In other words, if you liked the first one, you might be disappointed with this album's similarity between songs (no more "epic" 10 minute numbers). All in all, though, it makes for a good listen. Hasta, Kip Ratcliffe P.S. Did any southwesterners catch the Aug.19 show in Phoenix? Two words: In and credible!
