I haven't seen it and I know the jam seemed non-existant there for a few days. Sorry if it comes through twice. Anyhow, here it is again... Due to some unforseen circumstances, chances are I won't be able to attend the show which I have a ticket for. So I was wondering if there's anyone who needs a ticket for this show (August 9th in Pontiac, MI) who would like to buy it off of me? The charge is what I paid for it at Ticketmaster, $32.95. (Actually I'd paid $3 more for shipping, but I'm skipping that. Just the actual ticket cost.) This is extremely disappointing for me to have to sell this, but looks like I have to. Please let me know asap if you're interested since this show is in 2 weeks. Thanks so much! "You Go Now" is merely backround music to me. I did enjoy "Dead Air For Radios" but his original demos are the best material. One of two things have happened. Either he enjoys writing bland Eno-esque soundscapes or he's out of ideas. Not enough melody, too music static. I'll agree that the new Planet X CD is more interesting. Apples and oranges though. Zonder is gone and replaced by a machines. =A0Machines aren't bad (this one sounds great,) but it still ain't Zonder. Face it, Kevin has always been on another planet, but 'You Go Now' finds him in another UNIVERSE. =A0You'd better like soundscapes instead of songs, because there are a lot more of the former than the latter. Fates Warning consists of Ray Alder, Jim Matheos and Mark Zonder... with various hired hands filling out the remainder of the studio/live band. Sounds like a weird arrangement to me, but I suppose they have their reasons. I know they have referred to Joey as the "permanent hired hand" or "semi-permanent temporary member" or some silliness like that... :-) My only complaint witht he new album is that it is too short... The Mesa DC-5 is too loud for a dorm, at least when you set it up to rip like it's supposed to. If it were me, I have very little doubt about what I'd do. I'd get a Line6 POD thing and set it up to run through my computer speakers (or through my Stereo, which I would use in lieu of shitty computer speakers). This not only affords you a stereo signal, effects and full tone* at practice or even headphone volumes, but also offers you a method of recording direct to your PC without having to record the sound of a Crate or Peavey toy (I like the Peavey TransTube stuff for practice amps... if I had to use one) amp and a method of jamming along with CDs, MP3s and wavs (which you can slow down to learn and master the hard parts, like any good Shredi would do). That's my opinion. Apparently, it's also the opinion of many in the recording industry. The POD is a favorite with many direct recorders. - Chris * the author feels that it's necessary to point out that he does not condone the free use of the word "tone" with practice amps and amp emulators like the POD, but will concede that you can pull off some believable sounds, and could probably fool him, if you made it your life's goal. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Aug 2000 00:48:26 EDT From: email_address_removed To: ytsejam@torchsong.com Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 5565 Message-ID: << I gotta say I remember a post of yours where you say something to the extent of "Would anyone care if I signed my emails 'Warmest regards'?" Why do people bother? MTV doesn't set trends anymore, it only follows them. The movers and shakers at MTV only play what they want. This petition won't mean a damn thing unless it's gets at least a million signatures. What do you guys recommend? The various one's > I've seen is a Marshall, Fender, and Rogue in the same > price range. Mark, I would suggest a Tech 21 Trademark 10. I have a Boogie DC-2 combo and a Tech 21 Sansamp PSA-1 rack preamp that I use in a MIDI rack rig. The Boogie has tubes and the Tech 21 doesn't, but you'd never know it. The Tech 21 does a much better clean tube sound than the Boogie and the distortion sounds are comparable with the Tech 21 being much more versatile. The Trademark 10 is basically the Sansamp in a little combo amp (although it's not MIDI switchable like the rack unit). As you can probably guess it's 10 watts. This might not seem like much, but it'll be plenty loud enough for your dorm room or if you wanted to mic it for recording. It also works well for direct recording. I think it lists for around $400 and sells for $300. A lot of people will say you need a loud tube amp for decent sound but if you're just jamming in your dorm it's not a necessity. I don't even use a real amp in my dorm room. I keep my regular amp in the practice rooms for jamming with bands and in my room I plug a Line 6 POD into my computer for recording or practicing with head phones. The POD will give you tons of sounds and effects, even more than the Tech 21. Some of the sounds are good, some bad, but that's the price you pay with digital modeling stuff. I would stay away from any solid state stuff like Crate, Peavey, and even Fender. While they're cheap and easy to plug in and jam, these days you can get so much better sound from the digital modeling or Tech 21 for not much more money. If you just play metal and want Pantera tones or something, get a Crate and a Boss Metal Zone pedal. Otherwise I'd go with the Line 6 or Tech 21 stuff. Chris - I HATED it the first time I heard it. I pretty much consider the first PX album an absolute classic (I mean, Garsed AND Franklin? Come on - it doesn't get any better than that)and this one just bored me to no end. These days, I'm getting sooooo much music, I'm disinclined to really dig into something that leaves me cold and give it successive listens, but since it was PX, I did just that. One of my big complaints is/was Derek's use of really simple riffs. They're almost too 'rockish'. So that was the first hurdle I had to jump over, but I eventually started to get in the groove with them and just go with it. The other thing is, the whole thing struck me as one long sonic barrage. But slowly, after a few listens, it all started to settle into place. What wasn't at all distinct the first few listens suddenly started sticking in my head. Hang with it. The playing is absolutely monsterous, and MacAlpine is doing some wicked stuff, it's just not showboating wicked stuff. My only complaint about it now is I've got no idea who the hell they're targeting this music toward. It seems too extreme to appeal to anyone less that totally musically obsessed. Oh, and Tony Franklin BETTER have had something better to do, because he is SORELY missed... Mike __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! It is a weak spot of the whole thing, really. If you listen to it some more, you'll eventually stumble upon some moments of brilliance, but it's not really that great overall. I definitely like the "first" album better, mostly because of Tony Franklin's amazing bass playing. > What the heck happens to Derek? Where's the Platypus man? I love him, > but this is really ridiculous. Heh. I never thought his Platypus contributions were that great. > I heard tons of Virgil praises on the jam, but when I heard the 1-st > album and now this new Planet X, I really cannot see what's so great > about him.
